There are amazing sedans out there from Porsche , AMG and others, but to me they are not sports cars. Not all high performance two door cars are sports cars either. I once had a BMW M6 V10. Very quick car, but a GT , not a proper sports car.

I’d say yes. I consider my lancer evolution 9 and civic type r sports cars that are more aggressive then most 2 door coupes.
i never driven but good example would be the Lancer Evolution VI TME. Nothing gt about that.

If you could make a 4 door that was as light, then maybe they could approach sports car performance. But as long as they are heavy weight cars they will never be sports car performers. Being a sports car is not just about being fast in a straight line. No Panamera, S65, or BMW 750 is ever going to match my Corvette's road course track times even though they could probably beat me in a straight line

I have both kinds and I would say the Pana is a superb road car, almost a four door GT perhaps, but an RS is a sports car. Shorter, more track focused, less mass.
