Wes' 1984 928s Project

Hello Everyone!

Just snagged a 1984 928s locally and got it in the garage yesterday. The more I dig into it the more I think I basically stole it, but time will tell, lol. $2200 for a 37k mi car... it sat in the sun at some point so cosmetically it's gonna need some work, but it appears to be whole. Previous owner got it from a Harley Dealer who had his mechanic do the timing belt and water pump, but before he got it put back together something health related happened and he wasn't able to button it up. It supposedly ran when this work was done, so IN THEORY, I just have to put it back together and maybe, just maybe (crossed fingers), I'll have a decent mechanically sound car.

Had a friend that used to spend a lot of time here that spoke very highly of this community, and I've already found so many useful links the membership has paid for itself already, ha.

Ok. I'll upload some pics. Would love some assistance figuring out the options on the car; The VIN's are good, but I've yet to find a paint code or the options sticker in the rear...

Figured I'd use this thread as a bit of a project diary. Excited to be a part of the classic Porsche community!

Oh, also, anyone in the Maryland area? Would love to connect with some locals...

Should I get a 928?

I�ve been offered a 928 from a friend of mine that I�ve been helping him fix up from sitting in a barn for a while, and would like some advice on if I should get the car or not. It�s a 1984 model with 80k miles, beautiful condition other than it was a bit dusty. He�s already done the timing chain and water pump, has gone through the entire electrical system to make sure it�s clean and working, and we�ve replaced just about every single plastic trim part and seal on the car. From what I can tell, it wouldn�t be a problem to be my summer and fall daily since it�s been well maintained in the past, so I just need to keep up the maintenance. The main issue is that I would be giving my other car (a newer Malibu) to my brother, so the 928 would most likely have to be my winter daily as well, in a location that gets a fair amount of lake effect snow. For $7500, is that a good enough deal on the car to justify the potential issues in the winter? Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated!

(Yes I am aware of the front splitter broken, we have the replacement part just haven�t installed it)

1979 928 antenna wiring

I'm looking for some advice for the antenna solenoid/relay wiring. This is located in the trunk and wasn't wired when I got the car. I've added a new aftermarket antenna and assuming it needs to run through the solenoid to work. Thanks

Feedback on Hydraulic tappets

Hi All, need some expert advice on the Hydraulic tappets that I removed from my new (to replace the original) Engine. They can�t be pushed in as is, so I was wondering if people have advice on what to check. Should I just clean off the dark stuff with some brake cleaner? Thx!

I have had my 1988 Porsche 928 S4 VIN#WPOJBO921JS861468 at my house for less than a month over the past 2+ years. I have had it to several shops having them fix years of neglect and zero maintenance. I recently picked it up pretty sorted and found a few more items I need to make it 95+%. 1 of the 4 way adjusters on the drivers seat wouldn't move the seat forward, only backwards. I went to order a new switch and was asked if it had memory seats. I thought memory seats had (3) 4-way dials on the side of the seats. Mine has (2) 4-way dials but it does have a button on the driver door that allows for some seat adjustment. I was told to open the rear hatch and look for the white sticker with the option codes: I have included a picture of the sticker and have attempted to decode the codes with some of the references found online. The options code I have seen are: C02 48 State Emissions, 158 Radio Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46, 220 Locking Rear 40% Diff, 418 Side Protection Molding 494 Additional Amplifier, 533 Anti-Theft Device, 570 AC with Rear AC & 650 Electric Sunroof. M2842-81J-A2812 North America Standard 5.0 8cyl with Automatic Transmission with 2.20 final drive ratio, L36P HQ Venetian Blue Metallic Paint with Silver Grey Leather Interior.
I have about a dozen small parts to install to make complete before I have the paint fixed and the interior recovered. Just trying to make sure I am reading the option codes correctly.

Just saved this �86.5 5 speed from sitting in a field. It is red on black, with 79k miles and rear A/C

Dash is mostly crack free. Has most of the tool kit and jack. The interior is in good shape.

Passenger fender, front bumper and driver quarter need paint. Otherwise the paint cleaned up nice. Needs a front spoiler of course.

I bought it inoperative, but it does run now but will die if I let off the gas. It has been sitting for about 5 years. Before it was parked it had a Porken tensioner and a bunch of other things along with a x-pipe.

Not sure what it needs to get it running right, so far I�ve only replaced the fuel pump and filter.

928 exhaust

I have found a manufacturer in the UK who is producing 928 components including exhaust. I already have a set of long tube headers but they also affer very nice set of headers. I would have purchased if I knew it. Anwau, I wanted to buy the X-pipe with cats and they also affer it. I have just orderd it and am looking forward to receiving it soon. Maybe everybody knows the company but I will mention it in case you are not familiar. The company name is Ritech systems. here is the photo.

Hey everyone,

I�m new to the Rennlist 928 community and hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I recently had the starter replaced on my 1988 Porsche 928, and ever since the replacement, I�ve been getting a high-pitched whining noise whenever I touch the gas or accelerate. The sound seems tied directly to RPM/throttle input.

A few notes:

Noise started immediately after the starter install
Happens during acceleration
Sounds almost like a supercharger/electrical whine
Car did NOT make this noise before the starter replacement

I�m trying to figure out:

what could�ve been disturbed during the install
if maybe something is rubbing/misaligned
ground issue?
torque tube/transmission related?
accessory or belt issue?

I�m still learning these cars, so I�d appreciate any guidance.

Also looking for recommendations for:

a trustworthy Porsche 928 specialist in:

Orlando
Central Florida

Would love someone who REALLY knows 928s and can properly diagnose it instead of guessing.

Clutch Slave Cylinder Life Span

Hey guys - Jumped in the car this am, the clutch pedal went straight to the floor.

I remember replacing the Slave Cylinder before quite a few years ago. Looking through my old receipts, sure enough I replaced the Slave Cylinder back in Oct. 2019 and driven the car maybe 1-2k miles. I bought the repl. slave cylinder from O-Reillys.

Odd that something with such low miles would fail.

Thoughts?

ATIWE Steering Wheel

I found an old stock ATIWE steering wheel and decided to cover it with the originao classic grey color and it turned out to be fantastic. So i decided to install it using MOMo7005 hub. Then I realized

that 7005Hub can not be usesd for Air bag equipped GTS . I am currently modifying the hub. Once I succeed, I will report to you. But is there a better way to go aroud this issue?

1979 Clutch Help Needed

Hello,
I purchased a 1979 928 last year that had the engine out and was partially disassembled. I�ve slowly been putting it back together replacing timing belt gaskets etc. and now at the point of replacing the clutch before reinstalling the engine. I�ve had the flywheel resurfaced, purchased a new Sachs pressure plate, new throw out bearing and the aftermarket clutch disks from 928rus. When torque down the pressure plate to the 16 ft pounds, the release arm and throw out bearing look way to loose and sloppy, making me think I�ve done something wrong. Is this normal? My first time replacing a clutch so any help would be much appreciated.
