I'm bringing my 01 996TT home from Tx back to NC on Wed-Thurs of this week. I will be coming in on I-20 and want to go back I-85 to Charlotte.

What is the best route thru/around Atlanta? Should I take I-285 around or I-20 to I-85 through downtown.

Any ideas on construction delays and what times of day is safe to make it through downtown.

Generally, I go straight through downtown. Traffic will be an issue in the morning until about 9 and then again starting around 3, but, it can hit you on I-20, 75, 85 or 285!

I recommend I-20 to I-75/85 N to I-85N. The I-75/85 portion of the route takes you straight through downtown and is called the connector. As you get close to the point where the two interstates diverge into their respective roads, make sure that you are in one of the 3 LEFT lanes (of the 6 total). The 3 right lanes will take you to I-75N.

Agree,
The connector is 12-14 lanes, the bypass is 2-3 lanes. Go figure which is faster. BTW, no semis on the connector.

I rolled through atlanta around 2:30 pm with no trouble. I cruised across LA,MA,AL with almost no police/speed traps and then when I crossed into GA! Must have been a big black SUV every two miles along I-20 until I got to the beltway. Got to be really careful on that stretch.
