...just discovered that the bilstein facility to machine the grooves is in my hometown, less than 5 minutes from my house...

robstah, if you get a chance could you measure the OD of the springs? They may just be narrow enough to use on the early suspension...BTW might be worthwhile to flip that bolt around, the one that holds the banana arm mount (by upper shock mount)

I would imagine its pretty stiff with the spring plates+new springs?
Ill give this a go this weekend/week while my car is immobile waiting for the new gearbox. Safe to delete torsion bars and use this setup to have a fully adjustable rear ride height I would assume. Anyone confirm?
Ive got a set of these lying around, made for the front of earlier cars but after seeing this, I reakon its worth a bash! Ill measure up the rear shocks and see if I can proceed unless im missing something major:

First outstanding write up. Rarely does anyone, including myself, go to such lengths to address so many aspects of a DIY project.
Second....damn you. Now I have another 'must do' project that will bug me night and day until I give it a go.

I must admit I was skeptical about this project but you seem to have pulled it off, well done!
A couple of observations:
1. I'm still not confident running rubber bushes with higher spring rates. Have you looked at a sperical bearing option?
2. Springs are listed ID because the OD changes with spring rates. Without torsion bars do you think the larger OD of the higher spring rate spring needed will clear? (i.e: how much clearance do you have to accommodate 600lb+ springs).

robstah, when you change the spring rate to a higher rate the springs will be shorter and fatter. ID will stay the same but OD is bigger and the length is changed (shorter) to maintain the same ride height. Just bear that in mind when you measure for clearance.
Without doing the math a 10" 225lb coilover spring with torsion bar might have to be changed to 8" 600lb spring without torsion bar to maintain the same ride height and spring rate. So not only does the spring length get shorter but the OD gets bigger too.

Yep, that's what concerns me. Without the torsion bars you will need to run spring rates 450lb and up. Still these are a great solution to run with torsion bars and much cheaper than the Cups.
