Default 1999 986 AIM Harness OBDII vs CAN Adapter

I bought a used MXS Strada that's coming in a few days for my 1999 986 Boxster. Only issue is that is it has the CAN harness instead of OBDII.

I'm thinking I can buy this 14 Pin Adapter or find a CAN to OBDII Adapter. I've read that you can only get RPM from the OBDII port anyway. I don't think it's worth it to buy the whole OBDII harness since I'm only getting power, ground, and RPM from it.

What do you guys think?

I would suggest the analog harness. You don't get useful data from the CAN on a SB.

IMHO, you don't want the Steada since it doesn't log data. By the time you add GPS and logging it's the same price as a regular dash.

Thanks Matt. I got it for $600 so for now I'll just use it without logging and gps while on the track. Once I get more experience I'll add those for around $1,100 I'll still be cheaper than buying it new.

About the harness I think from the pics it looks like it has the 23 pin analog harness and the 14 pin CAN.
I think with the CAN harness I can't connect to the boxster at all, and if I buy the $30 adapter I linked in the og post I may be able to get power, ground, and RPM by running those specific wires to the OBD2 port. Everything else like wheel speed and pressure I can get from the analog.

Does that seem like the right direction or maybe there's a better way?

Hi Matt thanks for getting back to me. I got it for $600 so for now it'll be fine without logging and gps. Later on I'll buy the logger and gps for around $1,100 and it'll still be cheaper than new.

I think I can get power, ground, and RPM by buying the adapter I linked on the starting thread post and connect the wires individually to the OBD2 port. For wheel speed and the rest I'll use analog.

I can get the obd2 cable 14 pin harness for around $200, but feel it's kind of a waste since I'll only get rpm power and ground. Hopefully I can get those with the $30 adapter. Any other ideas?

OBDII is a waste in those cars. Use the single lead rpm input. Will need sensors for the others. Do you have an antenna for timing?

Tach through OBDII is refreshed so slowly, it is useless, there is an analog tac input that goes to the tach feed in the car that works great.

Looks like I found this from you lol. This is what I was looking for. The obd2 male to open end cable I'm getting off amazon has individual wires I'll just connect the specific ones I need and use manual sensors for the rest.

Default update: got it working - what's this sensor?

Ok so I got it ground and power working with the obd2 to pigtail adapter. the 23 pin "custom" harness doesn't have all the 23 wires coming from it (but has the 8 analog channels) so It seems like I'll have to add a RPM wire to the back of the aim harness connector and run it to my obd2 pigtail connector pin #9.

This "custom" harness has the analog channels wired out individually and labelled with tape ... so I guess I'm only doing wheel speed for now (need to find a sensor or maybe there's another way) so I can cut a patch cable and wire it directly.

Does anyone know what this small black box is? I think it's some kind of sensor. I opened it up thinking there's some model number or info but no luck.

Is there another way to get wheel speed or do I need a sensor and attach to wheel?
