Default windows 7 vs 10

I have 2 computers that run windows 7 for the race cars.

My company IT guy wants to upgrade to win 10 but I say, if it isnt broke dont fix it. I use these computers 12 weekends a year

I use a smarty cam in both cars and one runs aim and one runs motec.

Any issues with just staying on win 7?

I’m continuing with one win 7 computer, the other half dozen are win 10.

Do not update Race Studio 3 past 3.29.48, if you are running win 7 32-bit. If you’re running 64-bit win 7, go ahead and continue updating.

MoTeC has both 32 and 64-bit versions of software.

I really like win 10, and it’s more reliable and secure.

Microsoft is dropping support for 7 on Jan 14. What that means is when the next security hole is found Microsoft will not be developing patches / fixes.
On the other hand if you’re using any older devices/drivers they may not be supported in 10. An extreme example is I have photo related devices where I keep a XP box alive in order to use them.

I used to run Windows/XP in a VM (virtual machine) with network access disabled for Traqmate and RS2.. No internet, no netbios, no network, network card disabled. That's the only way to keep XP secure. Disable all external access.

But with RS3 requiring Internet access or if you want to access gen/2 devices like MXL/2 with WIFI all bets are off. I had to upgrade to Windows/10 and i keep it up to date.

Later app versions require 64 bit so that's a driver.

If you are going to run with network access enabled you really must run the latest versions with all security patches applied.

At a crowded paddock be sure to turn off WIFI & Bluetooth when NOT needed. They are both attack vectors.

I run my Windows versions under parallels on OSX but the same imperatives apply when not In a VM

I refuse to use Win 10 at home - far to much 'phone home' on the part of MS...

MS 7 is fine if you are thoughtful about what you do and what you download...
