Default Too many meters of Aim Sport Smartycam cable...

Can I shorten it? I have the 4-meter 712 SmartyCan to 5-pin 712 CAN cable. There's also a 2-meter version. But I'd like a 12-inch version, since I keep the little monitor from by GP HD right next to my Solo2 DL. Would it be crazy to cut the cable and solder the (probably 5) wires inside? Would it compromise the video or data integrity? This is the cable between the Solo2 and the monitor part of the GP HD.

You should be able to cut the 5 pin end off and solder on a new one. I have not done it myself, but I don't believe there is a reason you can't do that. The 5 pin connectors are a little tricky to solder. Don't try the 7 pin

AiM will also custom make them for you with molded on ends. I have bunch of custom length cables coming from Italy now! I'm happy to help you out in ordering them if you want.

Jack, pretty common for the larger dealers to stock these. Worth buying over building, believe me.

Check with Dave and Ellen Ferguson at Veracity in Paso Robles. If they don’t have it, they can make it.

I have short ones I had made to put a Solo 2 DL and a camera on one suction cup mount for coaches to move from car to car in about thirty seconds. Tidy.

Thanks, guys. It looks like Dave and Ellen Ferguson is the quickest way to get this done. It makes me nuts that Aim charges $50 for a length of cable, but that's really my own issue, both psychological and financial.

If you look at the component costs, and the time it takes to assemble, it's pretty good at $39.

I'd stay away from the ends and cut a section out of the middle and do one 5 wire splice. There might be 7 wires near the 7 pin (2 are for a mic that you apparently don't have)

I was at an AiM seminar recently and Roger said to just call the service center and they’ll make you a short cable. Not sure on cost though

I opted to make my own.

Those damn binder connectors are stupid expensive (712 are like 15 bucks each) . Then it takes me 30 min to make each cable since they are very small!/tight tolerances

39 for a molded cable is a steal.

Agreed it's not worth making your own. The standard cables (avaible 1, 2, and 4 meters) are $50, so I would expect the custom lengths are the same price. I'm not sure where Peter got the $39?

Thanks, everybody.

I will probably get mine shortened by Dave and Ellen Ferguson at Veracity. But I'm still working out final locations for the recorder and my Solo2 DL. I've still got some teething issues to work out with the whole system, but I'm going to make another post for that.

$12 is a steal compared to Autosport ASL connectors! It’s all your frame of reference.

That’s a fact! Building SmartyCam bridge and VBOX Video VCI connections to Cup cars, especially ones that need splitters (four Autosport connectors rather than one) can add up really fast.

Yeah. $600 in 3 shells, pins, and boots the other day!
