Default help recognizing dash material

Just purchased a 2000 Boxster S and need to do some detailing. I have option codes 981 and 983 which say all leather lining and leather seats front and rear respectively. Can anyone tell me what that means and how do I know if my dash is vinyl or leather for cleaning and conditioning purpose.

TIA

I have yet to do a Boxster with a leather dash. They have all been vinyl and cleaned with a Woolite mixture of 6:1 (6 parts water to 1 part Woolite) or Leathermaster Cleaner.

I then use Optimum Protectant Plus to dress it but most of the time I don't use any dressing at all but prefer the "El Natural" look.

You most likely have front "face" leather on the seats, leather wrapped steering wheel, shift, some leather panel inserts on doors, etc. Usually the sides and rear portions of the seats are vinyl. You should be able to tell the difference between leather and vinyl by a close inspection of the material. Leather will have an uneven or imperfect pattern to it while vinyl will have a much more even, almost repeating pattern or grain. The depth of the lines within the grain on vinyl is also consistant while the same grain lines on leather will vary. I'm trying to remember but...I believe the leather dash would be smooth and very soft with stitching.

If you want to be really **** about this you can remove the seats and feel the insides of the seat. This was you can feel the difference in materials. Vinyl will be very smooth on the backside while leather will have a buckskin or chamois type feel. It is also possible to do this while the seats are in the car but you need nimble hands and torso

Hope this helps and if anyone has different info please post it.

Anthony,

You are always quite generous with your experience. I've
gleaned a lot from your posts, and I can't be the only one.
So on behalf of the silent masses I just wanted to say "thank you",
it's much appreciated.
