Default Cayenne Base Suspension

Has anyone tried to make their base have a stiffer ride? Mine is so bouncy. It’s been that way since new. It has the 21 spider rims. If you can recommend specific parts (brand) I would appreciate it.

Assuming you have steel springs. All of the below is speculation without having the parts in hand to inspect.

Unless there are specific aftermarket upgrades (I searched and didn't find any), you are probably going down a rabbit hole of suspension configurations.

One thought is to use parts from a sportier model, for example GTS or Turbo. However, those models have standard air suspension and it would be a guessing game if those shocks could be used on a steel spring car. Quite unlikely for front shocks, because they are coil-over or airbag-over units.

Another idea is to use S shocks for a steel spring car, but the unknown here is whether or not S shocks are much different than base shocks, for a steel spring suspension.

The Air Ride Suspension on a Cayenne is the # 1 option to get, but you are past that. A very major difference in ride quality.

If you feel yours is "bouncy" then you don't need stiffer springs, you need better shocks to dampen. You don't say your model year or miles - consider the Bilsteins

Would lowering it with one of those kits coupled with better shocks may be the ticket

I don't know many that have lowered their Cayennes, but now you are into something totally different. When you do that, you have to reset camber and toe on your alignments and also match spring rates to shocks, or go the full -on coilover kit that is adjustable. If you don't know what you are doing, then you can seriously mess up your vehicle. I would suggest you go to a race shop in your area, a good one that sets up track cars, and let them drive the vehicle and tell them what you want to accomplish. They have the experience to set that suspension up for you correctly.

This is simply not true. While quite subjective, nearly every professional car review article I have read on the Cayenne says that the air suspension v. steel (with PASM) is almost impossible to discern. I bet most people would have a problem even telling the difference between steel alone and the other two options. Air suspension however is great for raising and lowering the car and off-roading.

I drove two air suspension 2023s last week end and two steel suspension 2022s last year. There is a marked improvement in our experience. I was shocked. Could not really tell when we got off the apron from the dealership onto the roadway. The joint where they meet was almost imperceptible. I checked the tire pressures at the next intersection (21 inch wheels) as I could not believe the difference between it and the steel suspension, like our 971.2, 997.1 and 957 have, or the 2022 Base models. But I was a doubter for sure before last weekend.

I was given a 2022 Cayenne S as a loaner which led me to this discussion. It handled like a large Macan. My 2019 cayenne handles like a ford explorer

Have you driven both suspensions on 9Y0?

I came from a steel spring base W166 GLE with 20" wheels to a 9Y0 Cayenne S with air suspension with 21" wheels.

The GLE rides like a wobbly Conestoga wagon compared to the Cayenne which rides like a very planted and smooth magic carpet.

Not true? Where did you get your BS opinion to justify your saying I’m a liar, from car reviews? I own ‘em, you read about ‘em. **** off.

We took delivery of 2023 GTS in October. The GTS has Air Suspension standard. Ours included Rear Axle Steering and PDCC. Code PPZKE9R4. I think I have a valuable perspective, despite not owning dozens of Porsches, for the original question of air suspension, and related. Sorry in advance for length of reply, but I spent so much time on this forum on THIS ISSUE, I want to say emphatically - Air suspension is HUGE.

Owned 2010 TDI Touareg. Loved it, (except for the service at VW). Lots of different tires (settled on DWSs), steel springs. 145k miles, 7 years.

Owned 2014 Cadillac CTS-V Wagon, manual transmission. Magnetic Ride Control (something like that), summer tires only.

Owned 2017 Cayenne, Base, Platinum. Steel, 21" wheels. Traded in with about 100k miles for the new GTS. And for the 2017, we traded in an '04 Cayenne.

To summarize - over 300k miles in the Touareg and Cayenne family, on steel.

GTS order was cocked up by dealer. Very, very upset, almost walked on deal before car was even in town. Chip delayed even further (Burmester); Hurricane Ian slowed down further. Total order to arrival in Jax - almost 11 months. Delivery - 1 week shy of a year. Almost walked on deal on pickup day, for mistake by dealer and also until better half adjusted to Truffle. Such a great car, sweet config, why were we upset?

Dealer accidentally confirmed 22" 911 Turbo wheels instead of 21" Cayenne Turbo Satin Platinum. We are a one-car household. Aesthetics aside, what's the problem in our cloistered first world?

---- 22" WHEELS ----Summer Only Tires----. The nearly opposite tire of luxe cruiser/grocery-getter, go north occasionally combo (with periodic testing by me of the PPAs - Porsche Performance Acronyms). CTS-V was fun, but I did NOT want anything that would sacrifice comfort. And I read every thread here at least a dozen times on Air Suspension, PDCC, GTS vs S, 22" vs. 21".

We are very happy we did not walk away, 1-year wait and emotions included. Many reasons, but sticking to topic of this thread, the biggest treat - AIR SUSPENSION. How do I know this with something more comparable than just the memory of prior, older cars and previous trips in other cars?

Loaners - after about a week in GTS, it went off-site for PPF and film: 2022 Cayenne and 2022 Panamera - both steel suspension. First was Cayenne, exactly what we just traded in, but new rev and brand new. Drove much nicer than 2017 we traded in. A lot. Very nice, but not the comfort of air on the GTS. I'm not talking about GTS performance kind of driving - I'm talking about comfort around town. Better half oohed-aaahed at Panamera loaner which was unavailable initially - then we had that. Sweet car - but again, air superior to steel. To put too fine a point on this - we had Cayenne and Panamera, brand-new, for ten days of a "test drive." Better half agreed, her words were "No comparison." Couldn't wait to get the GTS back.

Got the GTS back - still I waited for the 22" wheels to nearly reverse the benefit of air suspension, such that we would not appreciate it. Not even close. Occasional road wiggle on the summer tires, yes. But - absolute, supreme comfort. The likes of which I have never experienced. save for a ride in full-tilt RR autobiography LWB. Would I have wanted the 21". wheels, even now? Yes. Do I care very much yet? No. Will I complain when I need to buy new set of 22" Summers? Yes.

Sport, sport plus and response were not asked this thread but same answers - awesome all-around, perfect combination. Cayenne is not a sports car. But a GTS is knocking on the door of a lot of them. And comfort maintained.

Please no one take all this as steel is bad. Again, the new base Cayenne I would take home in a second. Panamera super cool too. But if you are on the edge of a GTS or are thinking of Air as an option, it is worth it.

while it is very impressive that you “own ‘em,” I’ll still take the opinion of professional car reviewers who test drive cars for a living over you.

Thanks for the thoughtful response, however, I think you are missing the fact there are 3 types of suspensions. Air/PASM, Steel/PASM and Steel. It seems like you are contrasting Air/PASM v. Steel. I would be curious if you would think the same of Air/PASM v Steel/PASM.

That is an extremely dangerous and likely poor position to take.
