Default 21" wheel == better handling?

Apparently, some journalists got invited to review Cayenne recently outside of SF.

This particular reviewer claimed that 21" wheels improve the handling so much that he considered it as a must have option.

Throw the optional 21-inch wheels on this base model and it'll transform itself yet again: The larger wheels are absolutely worth splurging on over the 19-inch wheels, and they transform the handling of the Cayenne to the point that you could feel that you've suddenly found yourself in the range-topping Turbo model. The difference is that profound, and if I were to configure a Cayenne myself the larger wheels would be a must-have feature, much more so than rear-wheel steering.

While I plan to get 21" wheels on the base Cayenne I am skeptical by the above claim and would like to hear your thoughts.

Part of it will be the wider tires so that will give a different feeling to handling. Less sidewall sometimes can make a difference.

I have driven both. 21” wheels will not make a turbo out of a base. The 210hp plus common turbo options like PDCC and PTV make for a very different drive, particularly on the track or in spirited driving. What are you looking for? Where will the majority of your driving be? I love the 21” and 22” wheel options available, however, since I am looking for comfort and the streets where I live are terrible and I occasionally want to go off-road I will choose the 19” fans.

I agree the turbo comparison statement is silly, it is what makes me doubt the reviewer's claim about the 21" wheels improves the handling significantly.
I drive about 50/50 between highway and street, definitely not going off-road anytime soon.

The wider tire should help the handling somewhat, I am more curious if anyone shares (or disagrees with) the reviewer's opinion that the handling improves significantly simply by opting for 21" wheels.
Notice that he even mentioned that the rear-steering has lesser impact in handling than the upgraded wheels and does not mention about other performance options on the test car.

Have put 3,000 miles on my 2019. Previously had a 2014 base. The 2019 has the 21 inch option, rides much smoother, and handles better than the 19's on the 2014. Yet, wider tires, but love the new feel and not a hard ride at all. Would order them again in a heart beat. Have a 911 with 19's..... much smoother ride and the tires are wider than my 4s

Just traded in my '16 Cayenne base with 18" wheels for a '19 base with 20" wheels. The new car is due to arrive within the next two weeks, so I was given a 958 Cayenne S with 21' wheels as a loaner for the time being. The S has no upgraded suspension options. I can honestly say that the handling is so much better than my old '16 Cayenne. The steering feels tighter. I was also worried about the harsh road conditions around where I live, but I hardly noticed any more bumpiness than I was already experiencing with the 18" wheels.

Thank you both for providing your experience. They help me nudge to order 21" wheels for sure now.

I have the 21 inch Rs Spyder on my 2019 and with PASM and the car handles great. I drove 20 inch wheel optioned cars and none felt as good as the 21's. Don't know if its the increased treat width but all the ones I drove on the 21's felt more taunt.

+1. My base Cayenne rides great on my 21" wheels with PASM. Highly recommend getting PASM on the base model (the only model that doesn't have it standard).

Good to hear (by the way black solid looks amazing - more pics always welcomed)

Have you tried with air suspension before ordering "just" PASM?

I have not tried air springs. I did not need the height adjustment and my SA seemed to think air suspension could require a costly repair since I keep my cars 8 to 10 years. But I have heard nothing but good things about the air suspension ride.

This press junket that the Autoweek reviewer attended must be the same one in a recent YouTube car review video. Do a search on Cayenne 2019 and look for Tom Voelk Driven. For those who are familiar or live in the Bay Area, you’ll notice the event took place at the Bardessono hotel in Napa.

just an FYI, the 21” wheels are same width as 19 or 20s.
