HELP - 2011 Porsche Cayenne - Loud Noise after Starting
We recently purchased a 2011 Porsche Cayenne with 54K miles. Approximately 15 seconds after starting the engine, there is a VERY loud noise (kind of like a “dong” sound) that occurs once and then goes away. We’ve tried adjusting every feature we can find, but nothing seems to stop the sound or reduce the volume. Any ideas as to what might be causing this sound - and how we can stop it? It’s REALLY loud - almost jarring.

Where might the DONG noise be coming from? That might help us in figuring out what it might be.
And welcome to the forum! One hint - besides the year of your Cayenne (good on you for posting that in the title) - the type (base, S, diesel, twin-turbo, twin-turbo Sport aka TTS) is useful to know. They are equipped differently and that might make a difference in the accuracy of the answer you receive.

Thanks, Don. The sound seems to be coming from the center of the console behind the display. The sound is not heard from the side speakers or the back speakers. The sound comes at either 15 seconds or 30 seconds after starting.
It’s a 2011 Porsche Cayenne Base.

Hmmmm... seat belt fastened? Has it always done this (since you got it) or did this just appear? It's not freezing where you're located right? (Thinking of BMW's freezing dong noise..[that sounds really odd - but I'm just leaving it that way.. ] ) The time interval makes it sound intentional. There is a function on the multi-instrument-display under "Vehicle" to read out any warning messages. It might be telling you that there is a stored warning message.

Seat belt is fastened (though it makes the sound regardless). We’ve cleared all the speed notifications for Trips 1-3. Will check the warning messages to see if one is stored.

Dong noise is usually seatbelt and it's very quiet. Have you fastened the seatbelt before you even put the key in the ignition? Try that!
Also look into your bluetooth. Get in the car without any cellphones on you. Try it then. Cellphone connect is one dong and that one is loud

We tried buckling the seatbelt before we put the key in the ignition and we still get the sound.
We’ve also turned the Bluetooth off completely (still get the sound) and tried getting in the car without any devices (and still get the sound).
The “dong” is so loud it makes you jump when you hear it. Any other suggestions?

Is it definitely a 'dong' sound, and not a mechanical?
Agreed with Tom M, record an audio clip and post it.
In my 2015 CD there is a loud 'click' about 10 secs after starting the car, that comes from behind the PCM screen.
I assume it's something to do with the audio CD player.

Here’s a recording of the sound. It’s the first “dong” that is the problem. It’s incredibly loud - this recording doesn’t do the volume justice. Any idea what this might be?

No idea what this is as I've never heard anything close to it from my 2011 S.
You may need to dig deeper, quite literally, and pull out the PCM unit to see what's back there. It's not too difficult and only requires the special tool to remove the vents - which can also be done using a pair of small screwdrivers. The Ford removal tool is only a couple of bucks at the local auto parts store.
Just be careful so nothing gets scratched up when pulling it out as there's not a lot of excess wring. I used a bunch of towels to protect delicate surfaces from the sharp edges when I pulled mine out to have it repaired. There's a video on YouTube that covers the process.

I too have never heard that but I'm wondering if it's actually coming from behind the PCM or the instrument cluster instead. I had the pleasure of playing surgeon on my instrument cluster a few months ago (successfully I might add!) and when I removed it from the dash, I found there is a small speaker located on the top of the unit. It's what makes the chime and warning sounds in our cars. You can easily disconnect it and try starting the car to see if your dong sound is still present. If not, you know where the sound is coming from. All that would be left would be to figure out why it's happening. Perhaps that could be solved with a PCM version update at the dealer.
It's not terribly difficult to access the cluster. You'll need to start by removing the drivers side fuse panel cover and then take it easy from there by removing the trim pieces. You'll need some plastic trim removal tools and a torx driver to remove the few screws that hold the cluster in place. Just be careful not to scratch the lenses somehow. You can't buy them separately.

Thanks for everyone’s help. We figured out where the *dong* sound was coming from. It was not a factory issue. Apparently, the prior owner had hardwired an Escort radar detector into the console and it had an external speaker behind the PCM that was creating the sound. We pulled out the PCM, traced the wires and were able to remove the detector. The *dong* is gone. Hallelujah!
