My son is 23 and he wants my un fixed 2015 diesel. His car is a Mazda 3 (Zoom Zoom) but the diesel is more fun for him to drive. Long warranty, too.

Get a 15 or 16 diesel with the bumper to bumper unlimited mileage cpo and he can drive it for 5 years worry free. I have one and have put 25 k miles on it the last 6 months.
Really nice car for a 23 yo.

I'm in the exact same boat as the buyer mentioned. 31yo and in the market for a Cayenne. Sold my 911 last year and have been depressed haha. Need a great daily driver that my wife and I will share. From reading the forums, the gas models seem to have a decent amount of problems, but the diesel obviously has a lot of "noise" around a purchase as well due to the fix. It seems to me that if I find a lower mileage diesel without the lurching/acceleration issues, I may be better off than the base model. I also like the warranty for the big stuff (I usually DIY most things). I think my sweet spot is a '14 or '15 with under 50k miles.

One thing on the diesels - there have been several reports of fairly large oil leaks from the diesel due to a defective gasket (or sealant) - requiring engine removal to fix.. so it makes getting one under warranty even more important IMHO. The base model V6 engine doesn't have any major issues that I've seen reported here.

True on the oil leak. Is the transfer case issue both gas and diesels? I saw several comments on that thread saying diesels were likely not experiencing the same problems.

Should also consider the warranty(2 year extra since the first in service date mimics the CPO warranty and 4 year 48k miles engine warranty since the fix) comes with all diesel models no matter where you bought it. The transfer case is different on diesel models, so no problem on that.

The VW Touareg shares the same engine, transmission and most major parts with the CD which has been solid so far I've heard.

The diesel without post fix issues are great cars. I have both a GL320 and '13 CD dilemma. Need to decide which car to keep or sell both to get something different. Too many cars in the fleet right now.

I wonder if the oil leak is covered by the long-block portion of the diesel warranty extension?

Oil leaks are covered under the extended warranty.

+10 for a diesel.

Drives great, can be chipped (mine went from 254hp to 305hp) is more reliable and MUCH cheaper to fix.

Not to mention it is almost immune to transfer box failure.

Coming up on 5 years with our '14 CD, just about 36,000 miles. No issues over the years. This SUV has that last forever feel to it. The diesel has amazing power, highway performance is stunning and fuel economy is excellent. The base has the same ride, but you'll miss the performance and the 700 mile range. Ours hasn't been fixed yet, but eventually it will go for the mod.

Even though the diesel might feel quicker because of the low down torque, I think the officially quoted 0-60 times are something like 7.3 for the diesel, and 7.1 for the base. In the real world, they're near as makes no difference. Once you get the VR6 past the torque dip at 2.5k RPM, it's actually pretty spritely. Definitely can't argue with the diesel range though, these things have huge fuel tanks. Our base cayenne will go 400-450 miles on a tank of premium.
