Yup...

Oil all under the car, precisely on the under tray and the rails either side of it directly under the gearbox.

2012 - 3.0 diesel - 82k miles

I will check it out properly tomorrow by jacking it up and removing the trays.

But upon googling, it seems its yet another common problem of the seal going and needing a engine out job to fix it? some people have paid 10k+ to get the job done.

Hope it isn't that, if it is I will have to sell the car on.

I sold my Q7 for this and the Q7 was full of factory defects that I had to fix.

German engineering at its best I guess.

Are you in the US? You might want to read the sticky on the diesel - it's right at the top of the list. Porsche put an extended warranty on all diesels in the US - and the car you bought should be covered by it. That would make the cost of repair nil - so chin up!

or is it a rear main seal? How is that covered under warranty?

Im in the UK and unfortunately Porsche UK don't offer any help on matters like this, been there with BMW, Audi, VW...list goes, generally they first want you to have a fully stamped porsche service history (or vw, audi..etc depend what car you have) only then will they normally look into it to see if they can cover you. Even then they usually ask you to cover half the bill if its a factory common defect. They generally dont want to know unless you empty your bank accounts to them. And for the record, Nope, I don't have a full porsche service history.

Today I removed the undertrays and managed to take a look, wipe it down and take some pictures. Will upload and post them shortly.

Could anyone advise on this?

I am also trying to work out what the sensor/connector is that goes into what looks like a mangled rubber part....

I'm just guessing you didn't have a PPI (Pre-Purchase-Inspection) done before purchase? That leak has been there a long time.. it's not new by any means. Your best bet might be the guy advertising on Ebay, sounds like he's very familiar with the problem.

I used to trade cars, so It was me that looked it over. I hunted everywhere, saw no leaks at the time. Although it may of had a leak, as its difficult to take a jack with you to look at a car 5 hours drive away, jack it up, remove the undertray and inspect. That is the only way to tell.

it wasn't showing signs of a leak on the undertray at the time of purchase. But 2 weeks later it is showing signs slightly. Seller might of wiped it all clean when I inspected.

3500 GBP way too much. Id rather sell the car as is to get my money back and never face a VAG engine again. Or take out warranty (about 1000 GBP) which covers repairs up to 5k. Not sure yet, but the more I look into it, the more it seems its the dreaded engine out job to fix it.

This is not the first time a known factory defect has effected me.

2009 bmw 1 series timing chain snap (Known common problem on this model range)
2007 Q7 failed panoramic roof drain (badly designed drainage system)
2006 Golf/rabbit wing rusting (sponge left in wing from factory)
and now this:
2012 Cayenne, known bell housing sealant issue

Im sure ive had a few more on top of those.

German engineering = Lost faith.

Hows your lexus? perhaps I should move over to the jap world again. Its just the DE design/styling that I like a lot. Spent so much money fixing their known common issues though. Argh!

What an evil guy to have sold this to you. He should get a baseball bat as a present. What flaws in his character did you notice?

The 2 year extended warranty could have just expired. I don't think the extended emmissions warranty will be honored (just guessing).

How can you avoid this if this has been cleaned by the seller? Is this bell housing issue an diesel issue or all Cayennes? What diesel oil leak issues are there. You can tell I'm about to buy a diesel soon.
I'm shocked at German engineering and cheap critical plastic parts, especially on the engine.

He was a middle aged guy, laid back and insisted he didn't need to sell it. I caught his add by contacting him after it didn't sell, so his sales adds had expired. He seemed like a genuine guy to be fair.

To be honest, I can't blame him, whether he knew about the issue or not. I'd do exactly the same as him rather than pay 10k to repair a seal on a car. Its up to the buyer to inspect it, and frankly, inspecting the bell housing is pretty impossible. I doubt even if you paid a company to inspect it they wouldn't remove the undertrays.

Your right about all those covers. Removing them when inspecting a car you want to purchase makes everything awkward. But to sell an expensive vehicle without telling them there is an oil leak is something I couldn't do.

The undertrays, aren't they just a few bolts? When you removed them, you could see the leak? The ebay link states that sump pump leaks are common too. I wonder how a sump pump leaks. Any other leaks you found in your research with diesels? I'll be buying one shortly. Thanks.

It seems like there isn't much of a pan on the CD. Mine basically just has the large piece that runs from the front bumper to under the oil pan. I think it stops before the bell-housing. Is there supposed to be more?

Yes, there are two plastic trays underneath. The big, wide one goes just past the oil drain bolt. The second, narrower extends to the transfer case.

Correct, around 12 to 15 bolts holding them on.
