Default Cayenne 958 steering wheel upgrade (958.1 to 958.2)

I've been searching the forums and can't seem to get a clear answer, can the steering wheel on a 958.1 be upgraded to a 958.2?

Yes.

There are threads about doing it on some Cayenne forum. You might check rennlist.com

There is a thread on 6spd in the 958 forum.

It can be done, but you have to have a PIWIS-III or a cooperative dealer to fiddle with things. It I not a straight swap.

Thanks, I saw that thread but it wasn't clear what needed to be done. Before buying the steering wheel I want to make sure this is something that can actually be achieved.

Looking for instruction and steps needed.

That thread is about the closest you have.

Yes it can be done, but you are going to likely run into some hiccups when you go to program the car so that all the buttons/paddles work. I would say that if you don't have access to a quality Tech that is more interested in solving something interesting than the PCNA party line and billable hours, then it's probably not something to mess with

When my Indy finally breaks down and gets a PIWIS-III I may give it a go if I don't have to return it to Porsche (diesel). My dealer, however, wants a full hour just to do things that they do know how to do (turn off the arming horn beep, turn of the seatbelt chime, etc...) so it's a non-starter for me right now.

I did it mine yesterday. Only need new steering wheel, airbag and some genius adapter from gpsadapter.us
Everything will work perfectly. It`s plug and play, take around 30 min to do it if you know what are you doing. They offer you all instructions you need.

This is big news! Before, you had to replace the wheel, column and controller.. then to get it to play nice you had to code out or modify the wheel position reading, potentially introducing all sorts of bad behavior to the driving nanny. I'll be looking into this right away, but any/all info you can share will be appreciated.

There have been other posts about it here and on 6spd. This may or may not be a shill, but it is a real product.

I've looked at it and the price is right, but I've yet to find the P/N list for what parts are actually needed (e.g. airbag and wheel. anything else?). I haven't been motivated enough to make a concerted effort though...

The instructions are a typical Chinese>English effort, but even then it would be a lot of effort to go through to make a bogus product that sells for a few hundred.
I'm super interested, but not enough to be an early adopter.

Porsche updated 958.2 steering wheel to steering control module communication architecture, new wheel with modular design.
There are 3 differences about MF and heating control signals processes:
1#958.1 MF wheel use LIN BUS version 1.3 protocol,958.2 use LIN BUS 2.0,difference of protocol version and payload data defined.
2#958.1 wheel MF key backlighting control use PWM analog signals,958.2 wheel control it by LIN BUS.
3#958.1 wheel wheel heating control and temperature sensor was analog signal,958.2 electronics box in wheel translate heating temperature and control signal to LIN BUS data.
I developed adapter between new steering wheel and original steering control module transla signals, working mechanisms as this picture

Ok now this is fascinating. I'm gonna watch this thread.

My Cayenne is optioned with the Sport Design steering wheel. Cool wheel but IMO not for a Cayenne - no buttons, has paddles (who cares in a Cayenne?), no heating. My "someday" plans include swapping it for a MF wheel.

Being able to swap for a 958.2 wheel, adding heat, getting the buttons back.... my gears are turning on this, that's for sure.

Right? I specifically shopped for a cayenne turbo with PDCC and PTV+, and the options package that includes these features also contains the sport wheel. It's very rare to see both PDCC and PTV+ alacart. I do very strongly prefer the paddles to the tip switches on the MF wheel, but do miss the ability to change tracks and volume on the wheel. 958.2 wheel is the answer. I'll probably miss the heated wheel in a month or two, but it parks in a heated garage so maybe not.

Unfortunately this is my first winter with the newer CTT and that means a set of winter wheels and tires are taking up my play money. I'll dig into this more next summer when hopefully there will be a list of forum members at that point who've already done the conversion and can give feedback.

Looks like wheels are ~$1k on Suncoast.

Can anyone (Yuan Li?) confirm that if I go from a "sport" wheel (no buttons other than paddles) to a "MF" wheel, all I'd need (in addition to this adapter box) is PIWIS coding to enable the buttons? Or do I need to add an extra module too?
