Air filter lasts for 80,000 miles?
I am perusing the maintenance booklet that came with my new-to-me 2011 CTT. Among other things, it reads:
Every 10,000 miles or 12 months - change oil and filter Every 30,000 miles or 4 years - change spark plugs Every 60,000 miles or 6 years - replace PDCC reservoir Every 80,000 miles or 4 years - Replace air filter element This is not my first German car but it is my first Porsche. Does Porsche really intend the air filter to remain in service for 80,000 miles or four years? I realize the filters are very large, but what sort of witchcraft allows such an extended service interval? BTW, the booklet further states: Every 2 years - replace brake fluid Every 160,000 miles or 16 years - change final drive fluid, change ATF and ATF filter |
I did my filters at 60,000 miles. The ones that came out weren't plugged up by any means. Slight discoloration on the intake side, but I actually wouldn't have hesitated to put them back in if I hadn't already purchased the replacements. This is a case of YMMV - since if you drive in dusty conditions (like Sin City) they will tend to clog up much faster.
I don't have a PDCC reservoir, so no issue there. Plugs were at 60,000 miles (they'd been replaced by first owner at 30k), and the oil gets done at 6,000 miles. Brake fluid - is 2 years, starting with manufacturing date (the fluid starts absorbing moisture as soon as it's put in the system.) Good move - all German cars/bikes I've owned use that interval. I think the other driveline fluids are going to be an 80,000 mile item for me. I also did have the water pump replaced (wasn't leaking, wasn't noisy, did have a tiny bit of play in it, and the engine was out anyway..) and the serpentine belt replaced - at 63,000 miles. Agreed. Changed my filters at 40k miles and they weren't dirty at all.

I think it depends on your area. I changed them in my diesel around 20k and while they weren't choked full, they were fairly dirty.
It's one of those things to ignore the official guideline and use common sense I think. Check them regularly (e.g. oil changes) and change them when they need it. |
Just changed mine, not sure how many miles they have on them. Probably 60k or more and they were quite dirty...

Just changed the filters on my 2013 Cayenne Turbo with 72k miles (Philadelphia suburbs). Was pleasantly surprised to see how clean the original filters were. Also changed the plugs and coils - passenger side rear plug/coil was a real PIA! :}. A very loud shout out of thanks to those who have previously posted DIY tips here! |
Changed air filters on my CTT last year at about 80k. Found them to be relatively clean but was disappointed to find one of the filters crushed--apparently were replaced by dealer somewhat carelessly. Not a difficult job, but a bit fiddly to get seated correctly. If yours has been replaced and you plan to run it next 80k, you may want to check to make sure it is in there correctly.

Take your time to make sure all corners fit nicely and none are pinched. Changed mine at 60,000 miles and the originals were somewhat discolored. Nice to get it out of the way, it’s one of the easier maintenance items. |
Is this still consensus? I read an article that recommended replacing them significantly more frequently and earlier.

I wouldnt bother, mine were also very clean after 70k miles. Its very vehicle dependent

It all depends on where you live. In AZ , fine dirt is always in the air....... just changed plugs and all filters at 30k........they are not expensive so here I will just do it all every 30k. You already have all the beauty covers off so easy access to do it.

30,000 (or earlier in dusty conditions) is where I'd replace. It's easy to do, not expensive and can have a direct effect on performance and gas mileage.
