I bought a 2016 Cayenne last week and I'm lovin' it. However, as most of you already know, it doesn't have Apple CarPlay. The 2017 Cayenne does. So I'm wondering what may be involved in swapping PCMs or if it is even possible. Have any of you investigated or done this yet?
I've been checking Google and now I'm just checking before I start bugging my dealer about it. I looked at aftermarket options and really, there aren't many options. I spoke with an installer at CarToys and he said it wasn't possible in a Bose system unless I was willing to rip out everything and start from scratch. I'd rather avoid that if possible.

Thanks in advance...
I doubt if you will have much luck. The PCM is highly intergrated with the dash and other parts of the car. It is on a CAN buss and must talk to various systems. An after market module would be a joke after you found out everything that you no long have. The newer systems are programmed and designed to work together. These systems are not programmable in the field.
A dealer can probably do it but it is going to be unholy expensive. The older models had a PCM upgrade option but it was 4k+ installed. I assume the pricing will be similar. I have a '16 with the older system and while I would like to have the new one I just can't rationalize in any way even asking the dealer how much it is going to cost much less doing it.
This something I too would love to have in my 2015 but figuring if even possible would be that $4k+ cost and just not worth it to me at that point. Would love to be proven wrong on this but I just can't imagine this not being rather expensive to change. It is kind of like me recently wishing I had the sport exhaust option and seeing the part at Sun Coast for $3500 then deciding, I do not want it *that* much.

When I was ordering my "S" at the last minute I noticed if I added the "sport package" it was only ~$800 more. The great thing was the sports exhaust was added as part of the package. I thought for that price it was worth it. The factory option and the dealer after install is about the same price, except you have to pay for labor if its done afterwards.

I probably should look into this more, I had read somewhere it can't even be added to a 2015 S, so never invested much time on the idea.
I had just stumbled upon this when looking at Nav DVD updates and assumed it was the equivalent of adding sports exhaust to a car that was not ordered with it:
The sport plus button is launch control. The sports exhaust is a different button. Looks like binoculars. As far as I know it can be added at the normal Porsche price.

The link I posted was to exhaust.
I happen to be at the dealerships way too much due to an ongoing problem with my SUV. So while there this week I asked about adding sports exhaust, he said somewhere around $5k and he said just not worth doing at that price tag.
I'm wondering the same. My '16 SEH didn't have Apple Carplay as an option, and it drives me crazy. Even if it's 4k, I'll explore down the road unless they upgrade the screen/tech in the 2018's like the one in the new Panamara. That looks incredible...
On another note, are you using the 'Hey Siri' function on your iPhone in the meantime? That alone makes it okay for now, with both voice control and access to messages/music.

I could see myself willing to spend $4-5k to add CarPlay. Would really boil down to my confidence level in the dealer doing install correctly as well as my satisfaction level with the vehicle. Since only would do that if having the vehicle for a long time.
Most people I know just use the voice controls on their phone and plenty happy with that solution.
Have any of you heard of or seen anyone replace the PCM 3.1 with Bose with a CarPlay compatible unit like the Pioneer AVIC-8200NEX? I took the Cayenne to our local CarToys and they said it couldn't be done unless I replace everything (head unit, amps, speakers). Seemed like overkill so I'm going to check with a few other installers.
The Bose unit uses fiber optic lines to the speakers. You can get a MOST adapter that will talk to the speakers and adapt to the new head unit. There are several threads about this on here.

A guy in Scotland managed to swap a PCM 4 in lieu of the stock PCM 3.1 into a 958.2 :
Makes sense not to touch the original wiring harnesses, so you'll need to create a custom harness to adapt from the 40 pin quad-lock harness on the vehicle side to the 52 pin quad-lock hardness on the PCM 4 unit. FM and GSM antenna connections are also doubled-up.
Still not proven to work with BOSE or Burmeister audio packages, but definately possible if you're willing to tinker with FECs and coding in the PCM 4, having fun with MOST adapters (or worse case change out the amp). You'll also possibly need lineout adapters as part of your customer adapter harness.
You'll need to upgrade the firmware on the instrument cluster, so you'll need a PIWIS II v18 at a minimum. Chris has a writup on a PCM 4 upgrade on his 991 that covers this: https://rennlist.com/forums/991/1142...a-991-1-a.html
You'll need to reprogram the VIN on the second hand PCM 4 unit you're getting, and play around with FECs and coding to make it work.
Get ready for surprises.

I wonder if it's just easier and cheaper to spend a bit and upgrade from a 2016 Cayenne to a 2017 Cayenne which comes with the PCM 4 anyhow?
