My car had 75K when it started making noise but the diff came for a car with 145k but who know if it was replaced. It was higher miles then I wanted but the price was right. Used ones range from $900 to $1500 plus shipping, with various miles 54K to 215k and visible conditions (54k one was missing a flange for $1300) and the price doesn't correspond to the miles or condition. I was looking at reman ones from Porsche but the cheapest I could find was $2,150 +$200 shipping +$750 core +shipping core back; my local dealer wanted $2900 +core. I figured the job isn't too bad and I'll rebuild mine as a spare if I have issues in the future.
I just did a feel by hand, check for any odd noises and look at the oil; if the oil is drained pop open the drain plug, stick the end of a rag it to check for any metal flakes or particles on the bottom of the case.
I'm not sure that causes the failure of the pinion bearings but in the first gen Touareg carrier bearings (either side of the diff) failure was common if you had tires with different levels of wear. Everyone on the Touareg forums said the front diffs were the week link in the drivetrain; the gen one Touareg diff looks nearly identical except for a couple casting differences, the mounting tabs for the PDCC distribution block, and flange size.

I do mine every 15-20K it's easy and cheap insurance. also allows you to monitor anything in the oil.
Pretty sure the Touareg guys have found a way to rebuild them at least at an axle shop.
The carrier bearings are easy (I replaced these in my Touareg) since you don't need to reshim but the pinion is harder since you need to set the preload, backlash and the wiper pattern. I called a couple shops that specialize in differentials and they all said they can try to rebuild it but they don't have a parts list or assembly specs and can't guarantee they gat finish rebuilding it.
Took the front bumper off to work on a few things. 1. the front grill shutter was not working. The plug was off. It looks like this bumper was taken off before and then the wire was never put back on. So I put it back on and the shutter works. 2 whoever took the bumper off did not put it back on the right way and it has annoyed me for a while. The part of the top of the shutter surround was sticking under the bumper and looked awful. 3. I cleaned out the intercooler of any dirt and debris. 4. I cleaned out the front water drains and ac drain. 5. was trying to figure out why the driver's side headlight washer was leaking. I cleaned it up and it is not leaking at the moment. But I also haven't tried to use it.

Hey Gus. I already put it back together. Sorry I do not know that part number. I did this, this morning.
New transfer case, timing cover bolts, ac drain tube.
all under warranty, but at 40,000 miles, I am starting to think that these cars
are crap. Yes they drive well when working properly.......
Certainly not as dependable as a toyota!
... They're a lifestyle appliance to be changed out every two years to stay 'with it.' At least that was the sense I got last time i was at Strong Porsche. Too young to know if that was always the case (at 40, yes,) but I think I have rose colored glasses about Porsche not always being that. I know I miss my 957, but mostly I miss my late father's 968 coupe. Less complex, yes, and bankruptcy years, but still.
Having said all that they have made plenty of questionable vehicles over the years The 924 the 914 Heck the 928 became a complicated mess The early 9/11L the fact that they could not design a reliable chain tensioning system until right around 1998. All of which is to say that the one thing different is that those cars were all much simpler but every generation has had these catastrophic issues and so in a way owning a Porsche is not a completely logical decision. And that is as somebody who has been fortunate enough to own more than one including a 957 turbo that developed premature bore scoring, and my current CD that is starting to happily leak oil from the chain tensioning covers.

The driver's side is slightly higher, but both as they are had people flashing their brights at me this morning. I pulled up next to a Ford SUV with LED headlights at the same height and noticed the levels were similar, but eh.
Installed new starter. Checked rear manifold coolant hose or barb...not the updated. Now wondering if I should replace it, that and the thermostat housing. For now, moving forward and going to replace water pump and t.stat
New starter in ...somewhat of a pita To replace or not to replace.. Do the fixes found in the DIY section..
