Is a separate microphone a must? It doesn't look OEM with the mic mounted on the A pillar. Any other option for the mic?

I don't know if its a must, but it is if you want to use Siri as its driven via the CarPlay unit itself, since it can't directly hook into the in-built one. However, one thing I would say is that its WAY better than the standard one. Had a few people mention its a lot louder and clearer. A small price to pay I think.

Pretty sure this is done through the multi-function menu in the gauge cluster.

You would think! Actually just need to wait and it will automatically set itself from the GPS time via the navigation system. All done and sorted.

Only setting need to do is make sure summer time is sorted.

I put mine in the A pillar, but thats personal preference (back in the old days, cell phone kits tended to do this). NM Automotive instructions actually suggest putting it on the steering column, but thats up to you. And yes, its wired, but its a long cable and easy to hide in the trim. I ran mine from the back of the CarPlay unit in the passenger footwell, behind the PCM and then out below the steering column. Then behind the trim and up through the door rubber / weather strip. Hides well and no trim pieces to be removed. I have a dashcam wired up on the passenger side using the same approach.

Just finished my install... I have the XM module, so needed 25mm risers and everything fit in there.. the risers are M2.5 and lots of kits available for $10 on amazon.

Overall the setup is pretty good, you do need to switch to AUX audio manually which is an extra click, but this is a hack. You cant have your radio playing something and carplay audio at the same time even though the screen is showing carplay.

Does the kit include everything you need? Are the risers included?

I am extremely encouraged by this, have been looking for a solution like this

I am moving ahead with plans to self install. Hopefully it doesn't require special tools

Couple more comments from me a couple of weeks into using it - firstly, my son mentioned that he was really impressed with how well it works and integrates, so for a teenager to to say that, I was impressed. And second, I would make sure the CarPlay system is updated too. I had some early issues with it, but updating the system and the CarPlay itself made it much better, and dont forget to update your iPhone too - there are a huge bunch of updates in IOS 12 and then with the 12.0.1 release (though it doesnt say what was fixed in that release). I dont get any disconnects, crashes or similar.
