Default Extra drag from mirror extensions causing mirror to fold in

When towing on the highway, the extra drag from the extension mirrors I put on (I think they're called the Aero mirrors) causes the driver's side mirror to intermittently fold in (when the wind hits it just the right way). My only recourse when this happens is to slow down and even then it happens a few times. Given that it's only the driver's side I'm thinking that the break-away is a bit loose for that mirror. Does anyone know how the system works and how to adjust it to make it a bit tighter? I did a quick search but didn't see an answer (apologies if this has been answered, but I'm so tired I'm seeing double at the moment so may have missed it).

I have the same problem with the DS mirror with ext. mirror on my 09. PS mirror no problem. Speed gets slightly above 60 mph and the DS mirror swings in. I took the mirror apart and it is spring tensioned, no bolt or nut to tighten. I shimmed the spring hoping to tighten it up a bit but this did not help. For now when using the ext. mirror I shim the mirror to keep it from moving. Once I get some time to take it a part again I will see if there is anything else that can be done short of replacement.

Thanks very much for the info. Please do report back on what you find when you have it apart again. My DS definitely has much less tension on it when I manually fold it in as compared to the PS. What do you use to shim it? It's such a small gap at the separation...

Put some painters tape on the front side at the joint. Place it so that under tension the tape prevents the gap from opening.

Thanks, I'll give that a try!

Might need to try a stronger tape, but the concept should work. Choose one that won't tear up the paint. Vinyl tape is good for this. Packing tape and duct tape would be bad choices in my opinion.

All I had when it first happened was some corrugated cardboard that I folded and placed in the gap at the bottom of the mirror. This works most of the time until it rains. I tried wood shims in the gap but it hasn't worked either. I didn't think of using tape as jagman1 suggests. I will give it a try as well. I will let you know the outcome.
