Pitted tires--causes?
#18
This happened to the OE Lat's on my Range Rover, but I attributed it to a lot of wheel spinning while climbing very steep grass/gravel inclines - the center tread was almost completely removed. I think it is a rubber compound issue on the Lat's. I've since but AT's on the Range to mitigate the spinning, and have not had any issues with chunking.

We have Lats on both our Cayennes, about 25k on each set. Both sets exhibiting chunking.
Edit: I just checked my wife's tires. One tire has a DOT code that ends in 002X 0115. The other three tires end in 002X, no date code. WTF?

Yes, there a growing consensus these things do not do well with our vehicles. I think I am going to try out the Hankook option for my next go-around. I have had good results from them on other vehicles.

Just for the hell of it I contacted Michelin about this. I actually got a personal reply back with a case number for each vehicle. I'm supposed to take them to a local Michelin dealer for evaluation. They'll probably blow me off but I'll keep everyone posted.

Many times the date code is only on one side of the tire. It may be on the inside of the others.
