What is the real difference between a VW and a Porsche?
I have an 08 GTS and when people make comments about it being an expensive VW... what do I say? Is there really a difference between VW and Porsche? Thanks!

Ask them if there is a difference between a Ferrari and a Fiat, or an Audi and a Bugatti. Not worth your time responding if they are that clueless. Just trying to get a reaction. Corporate ownership has little to do with the finished product.

I drove the CD prior to buying my '14 Touareg tdi. TO ME there wasn't enough of a difference in the finished product. However, a GTS and turbo (S) are variants above and beyond of what VW offers.
Now if we are talking about the VW beetle and the 911 then of course there's a bit more to it

People who say that usually fall into one of two categories:
1. Those who know nothing about cars and heard it once before so they continue to say it.
2. Those who know the industry but just out of spite or to get a reaction out of you will say it because they think the Porsche owner will be offended by the reference.
So you can see in either case it's barely worth acknowledging.

The V8 engine is pure Porsche. It's not found in any Audi or VW, and was engineered by Porsche. The calibration software for the chassis (PSM) and steering is also Porsche. Same with the brakes, though they're found on the Treg. In that instance, it's not that you're driving a cheap VW, but that the VW owners are getting Porsche brakes.
Porsche and VW concurrently engineered the chassis. If it was just a VW product, it probably wouldn't have the road-holding pedigree that it does. Everything behind the dash, and all the ancillary parts are all shared among many car manufacturers. The V8 in the treg is from Audi. The only thing in a treg that is purely VW is the V6/V10 motor and the stereo.
With the 958 CTT, there is a massive amount of difference between it and a treg, both in terms of shared parts and capability. The 955 and Gen 1 Treg were mostly identical except for the motor and maybe a small difference in suspension.

I often find a Touareg parked next to my GTS . The ironic part...they probably paid a lot more for that VW for way less performance.

Like it or not, shared components and assembly between brands are a fact and are here to stay.
The Body shell, paint, interior, seating & glass on the Touareg & Cayenne are both built simultaneously at the VW plant in Slovakia. At one point, the Touareg continues down the line as the Cayenne is hoisted off, mounted on a train and shipped to Leipzig, Germany for final assembly. Why Leipzig? The labor rates in the old "East Germany" are still lower than those in the western part of Germany; making it cheaper to build.
Engines are assembled in Stuttgart and shipped to Leipzig for drivetrain assembly and marriage. To get a "Made in Germany" label on the door jamb, even the time units required to mount the Cayenne badge on the rear tailgate are accounted for by the bean counters at PAG.
Back in the early 1980's, GM was sued by individuals after finding out that the engines in their Oldmobiles were built inside a Chevrolet plant. Today, this is the norm across most major brands.
Early 356's were also using VW components, as Porsche re-utilized this method years later with the 914 and the 924/944/968 model lineup. What makes a Cayenne a VW and/or vice versa? You decide...

The VW is way nicer inside than the Porsche (which is super nice) and the VW will stomp the crap out of the Pig in a drag race. We love both cars for sure.

You must have a very badly spec'd Cayenne then. Your Cayenne is a V6? Otherwise the V10 TDI's 7.8sec to 62mph would hardly beat your Cayenne.

Ooh, not so much. At our house we have a 07 Touareg V10 TDI, and my more recently acquired 955s. The two cars share a ton of parts (suspension, transmission, etc) and the multi line comparisons being made here are correct.

The V10 TDI was available 2004 and 2006-2008.

Yeah - that V10 was damn quick, especially when passing. Not unsurprising given the 550 lb ft of torque it has. The Cayenne S is basically the same performance as the Treg V8. V10 was much faster than both, IMO.
