Default How much discount should you expect from the dealer on a new car?

Hi All,

What is the expected discount on a new car? I am looking at upgrading my Cayenne and want to negotiate the best deal that I can. Is 20% a reasonable expectation?

So you think a Porsche dealer is going to give $20,000 off of a $100,000 car? I've never heard of that, especially since Porsche's program is to not overload their dealerships with cars. I know the Delaer here in town gets close to sticker for every car they sell.

My friend is on his 7th new custom ordered BMW now from the same dealership (e39 535i, e46 320i, e38 740i, e90 330i, e65 750i, f25 X3 35i, f10 550i), and he get's around 8% off sticker. I don't see a first time Porsche buyer walking in to a dealer and getting any discount at all. This is obviously in Europe though, here it's not common to for dealers to stock new cars on their lots - everything is by order.

Thanks for the replies. This will be my 3rd Cayenne (in 7 years) and buying from the same dealer so they know me well. The last one, they gave me $10,000 off of the $100,000 car plus $5,000 more on my trade in that most other places were offering so I got a pretty decent deal. I was just curious as to what was standard in other regions. We haven't started negotiating discounts but they have offered a pretty decent trade-in on my current Cayenne so am wondering how much of a discount I can hope to get off the car itself. I also get the sense that they offer a little higher trade-in in order not to discount so am wondering if I were to sell it myself, would I be in a position to negotiate a better discount.

I am looking at the e-Hybrid so fairly popular model but we are also expecting a significant refresh to the model next year.

Also, I am looking at one that is currently in stock that has a few options that I don't "need", has anyone been able to get the dealer to throw in unwanted options for free?

If it's a 2016 in stock now you'll get a reasonable discount as it's a model year old already as 2017's are already in stock. For a 2017 model, probably not too much.

Dealer profit margin is around 10% of the base price and 15% on the options. In your part of the world the import tariffs may impact dealer wiggle room on the final price.

Purchased a new Audi TT roadster loaded with options we did not want. We asked that they remove the options or we walk. We paid the base list price, the options were free.

Thanks v10rick, that is helpful. I guess I really should have been asking what was the profit margin for the dealers in the first place. I am meeting with the dealer today to discuss price so it helps to have a reasonable expectation.

Actually the dealer profit margin is a bit more complicated than that. The invoice of the car is 10% off of msrp. They can make an additional 5% if they do certain things like conforming dealer. The break down is 2,2, and 1% but I forget what the other categories are. I know one of the 2% is conforming dealer. So it is possible for the dealer to not get anything past the invoice price profit. The potential extra 5% is quarterly distribution.

OK, for what it is worth, I was able to negotiate a 13% discount off of the price of the Cayenne S e-hybrid in the form of a discount and higher trade-in on my current Cayenne. They basically gave me an 8% discount and then I negotiated that they also throw in some of the options that were on the car that I deemed unnecessary (although I did want them), including 20" RS Spyder design wheels, privacy glass, floor mats, and comfort light package.

Looking forward to taking delivery of it next month.

If your dealership is in Japan I wonder if your experience has any similarities with dealers in the US. I suspect not.

I recently got quoted close to 9% off for the 2016 C EH in CA SF bay area. Nealy $8K off the MRSP. Is it too good to be true? Other dealers within 100 miles can only go for a 5% off. Thank you!

I was able to get 5.6% off my 2016 CSeH which was in dealer (also in SF Bay Area in California) stock at the end of March 2016. The options were PP+, air suspension, 21" wheels, heated steering wheel, metallic paint. I thought it was a good deal at the time given it was end of the quarter, but now that I see what other people got, it doesn't look so good anymore.

Which dealer you used? I used TrueCar to get the quote from the dealer within 100 miles, Carlsen is the only one quoted $7.5K off the $85K vehicle. PP, 20 S wheels, metallic paint. The other dealers can only do 5% off at most...

Thanks!

I got mine from Livermore. I think if your deal is real, then it's a good deal. There are people here getting 10% off:
