What's above is correct and stated in the owners manual... One of the posts above was a bit off as the front differential doesn't lock on either a 957 or 958. The 957 and 958 vary with the first lever press, as a 957 will go into low range at with the first press, while the 958 only changes the behavior through programming of various things (trans, PDCC, PSM, PTM, ABS, etc.). If a 957 has the Off-Road Technology locking rear diff, or a 958 has PTVPlus, then the rear differential lock is available at the 3rd switch activation.

Got it. Yes Thanks. I finally got a chance this morning to push the lever & test it out in my 958 (only had it on a snow road for 20 min one day back in Feb on 2nd day of ownership). Sorry, Sorry, Sorry I posted wrong based on what I was reading that day in my manual. I corrected my earlier post.
And yes, mine has PDCC & PTVPlus, so it will behave as you say.
I did get some feedback on my question about behavior. But I am still wondering if I can push the lever once & be in the first off-road mode (non-diff-locked), and drive it at 60 mph?
TIA

Off-road mode is made for off-road, so it's not going to be calibrated for 60 mph on snowy roads where traction is variable from grippy pavement to ice. You're best bet is to leave PSM on and drive respectably given that you're on A/S tires. No amount of programming is going to overcome physics in the event you need to make a sudden braking maneuver.

I'm sorry - but I'm not going to be apart of any conversation regarding driving a 5 thousand lb vehicle at 60 mph on a snowy or icy road with A/S tires and in "off-road mode" because the car stops better.
If you can't safely drive the Cayenne on public roads with PSM on, then you really should re-evaluate what you're doing.

Sorry to hear you're bowing out of the conversation. I thought it was going well.
I've driven safely at higher speeds (ok, more like 40 - 45) on dead-straight highways (upstate NY), where the snow pack is tight on the road, and no one else around... safely. I'm hoping all of us can make our own decisions on when to execeute, separate from this thread (trying to keep this a conversation about feature / functionality).
Let me rephrase my question: Will the Cayenne actually allow me to drive above 20 mph, with the lever pushed up one position (off-road)? ... or will it turn the "off-road mode" off again once I exceed 20 mph?
Relevant to my question above; Assuming the 958 ALLOWS us to drive above 20mph in "off-road",... Do you think the change in behavior (ie modifying the PSM, PTM, ABS) would BENEFIT driving characteristics given my above described conditions? ... or hurt?
Thanks again. (I know this is a "PIC" thread,... but can't help posting)

Did some light trail-driving today. Some of the mud holes were a bit deeper than anticipated, but the 955 just rolled right on through. I left PSM on and used low range but not the center diff lock. The PSM/PTM did it's thing a couple times when I was picking up a wheel or going through really greasy mud, but for the most part there was no drama.
Next time, I'm going to disconnect swaybar droplinks so the articulation is better. The swaybars were definitely making the suspension fight itself.

So, had a little "fun" tonight... Went to see a cottage in the woods. Asked the owner: will I make it? Oh sure, no big deal. 4 hours of pulling the pig out of ice mixed with mud, knee deep in icy water proved that statement to be a little wrong.
My friends lifted q7 on 33s that came to the rescue got stuck as well, other friends' hilux with chains is still in the woods as we didn't want to spend the night.
Long story short: ice broke under the car in a very muddy terrain, got stuck with all 4 wheels in the air in 2ft of icy muddy slushie. Later on, I found a pic of how the road looks in summer after a little rain. I wish I checked google earth and panoramio pics earlier.
Sorry for crappy pics, I was messed up.
