I wonder if just leaving the fuel cap off for a couple of hours wouldn't resolve this?
Gas Vapors are heavy, if there is no place to spill over, a saturation point is reached in the tank and it would not evaporate. It would not escape up the fill tube. Even my old 1970 Cuda has a vent in the trunk, and there is a trap, just like a water trap in a sink, just upside down. Will let air in, but no vapors come out.
Trust me, I tried everything you can and can't imagine. The reason was the saturated charcoal filter and some kind of valve (it's sold together). Touareg parts went in w/o issues.
