I wonder if just leaving the fuel cap off for a couple of hours wouldn't resolve this?

Gas Vapors are heavy, if there is no place to spill over, a saturation point is reached in the tank and it would not evaporate. It would not escape up the fill tube. Even my old 1970 Cuda has a vent in the trunk, and there is a trap, just like a water trap in a sink, just upside down. Will let air in, but no vapors come out.

Dumb question: You're sure the tank was about 1/2 full when the gauge said 1/2? Maybe the gauge is off and you really had 3/4 full???

Try twisting the hose CW or pulling it out part way when filling.

Have u got to point when u fill to full maybe use a race fuel jug if a gas station doesn't work does the fuel meter read full? Mike
