160k is way over due for a fluid change.
every 50k km is more like it. my S has 45k No J hook for 8 speed AISIN. You need special adapter: Part # VAS6262-2 ( screw in adapter ) Part # VAS6262A ( tool for filling up transmission ) - this the same stuff that dealer would use. If any one wants to borrow it more then happy to lend it. Fluid cost is around 36$ a litter from VW ( I bought bottle from Porsche dealer for 56$ but it came with VW label and the same bottle at VW is 36$ or cheaper ) - If VCDS(Vag-Com) will not work for reading temp, I'm going to use dual thermocouple - 1 taped to the pan, and one will be measuring oil in catch container for ATF. |

Greg, the concern is whether 160K is too long a service interval, and the question is whether the fluid provides good service and protection up to that mileage. You can read other people's opinions and theories, I'll share just my experience. On my '08, I recently changed the fluids at about 70K miles. Before the fluid change, no real issues with the transmission, just the very minor occasional lurch when shifting that I associate with all automatics. The ATF drained very clean, altho the differential and transfer case fluids were dark and opaque. Replaced with dealer fluids. Despite low expectations, my truck now shifts even more smoothly, no more little lurch.

Fair enough; your car, your maintenance schedule. I'll never get close to my tranny service with this car. I only plan to keep it until the V8 Cayenne Diesel S comes to America, or 39,000 miles, whichever happens first

Regarding tools, for the transmission the best adapter is a J-shaped end that lodges in the filler, hanging over its lip. I used Assenmacher's five-litre bottle:

Just my two bits worth, but I've seen the lip over which that J-adapter works. I think you'd be more successful with the ATF104. Besides, I think you missed where it says "ATF 104 (Applicable to 1999 and newer Porsche models)"

Greg its like any other transmission actually that AISIN is installed in many other cars including Toyota etc ... nothing to be scared off.
Thats it ... I plan to keep this car for a long long time ... so I rather start earlier then later. KevinGross - not sure if your tool would work with the 8 speed AISIN as you fill up this transmission from the bottom ... I don't think this would clear the snorkel but if it I will it should do the trick The tools that I mentioned are exact same tools that dealer uses as this is what official WM calls for. It's not the level of difficulty that concerns me. It's breaking open a transmission so prematurely that should be cause for pause. If I kept the car for the whole 160,000 miles or 16 years I'd tackle it too. But not before. Nevertheless, it's not my car that's undergoing the knife

other makes recommend changing the fluid more often if the vehicle is use for hauling/towing.
I dont recall seeing this in the P manual. |
