Reverse Camera Cover Won't Flip

1 Attachment(s)
Hi,

Today, my 08 Cayenne reverse camera cover seemed to be stuck. It wont flip when on R as usual. I searched the web for this issue ( even this forum ) and found nothing about it except for a dead topic on another forum. I managed to get a photo from web that is similar to my case. When I am on R, the camera works and it transmits fine, but you can only see beneath the cover.

Has any one had this issue before ? Do I have to replace the whole Cam, even it works fine ? Or can I just replace the cover that won't flip ?

The cover is just a plastic trim piece that snaps on. Porsche only sells the whole camera/extension motor as a unit for over $1500. You may be able to take it apart and check the motor or at least listen to it while someone puts the vehicle in reverse.
In my case the camera went bad but the extension motor was fine so I just replaced the camera with an aftermarket one that is as good or better for the tune of $25, the technology has come a long way in just a few years. The whole trim piece that goes across the back of the hatch can be carefully pried away to reveal the camera itself. If you are a good troubleshooter you can check to see if the motor gets power and start from there.

Mine's a 958, so I can't help. Perhaps there's a camera switch beneath the 957 gear shift lever. Do your backup lights work properly? They too are clearly switched on/off in conjunction with the gear shift lever position.

I have the same issue with my 06, I have been messing with it for months with no good results. I have taken everything apart and even cleaned and regreased the gears in the assembly. Mine will sometimes come out and then not retract, sometimes it works and then sometimes it doesn't. You would think that it was a connection issue but I also cleaned all the contact point and still no luck. I have currently removed the panel with the camera installed and replaced with a later model OEM trim piece. I am looking to add the camera to the license plate light using the OEM wiring but have not been able to determine the correct camera to buy. Let me know if you figure out your problem as this appears to be an issue that is now starting to show up.

I have recently had mine jam open, not able to move it by hand; the extension pins were clean and shiny and dry. A dose of WD40 and some road bumps got it working again. Now works perfectly, I then added some silicon grease to the extension pins. It just needed a bit of lubrication and the added bonus is that I now have a stable picture at night.

Yours may be just jammed in if the camera switches on.

Mine was not jammed as I can freely move the camera in and out by hand, my issue is an intermittent problem as well and I just got tired of it not retracting and sticking out looking stupid. Not sure I miss it much as I always look backwards anyway. If I had a boat trailer, I am sure it would be missed.

I am currently having similar problems. It looks like the motor is going bad. I can get a refurbished one for $1200 so I am also trying to figure out a better solution.

$1200 for the camera is the reason I decided to remove the camera and replace with the trim piece. Once I figure out which camera to purchase, I will replace either one on the license plate lamp or liftgate handle. Let me know if you figure out which camera will work with the OEM wiring and voltage.

Guys, I have a problem with my backup camera cover. Does anyone remember, how are the springs located on the hinges? Do they push the cover up, or down?

The plastic cover just snaps onto the motor/camera piece below it. The motor powers the camera up, and the motor powers the camera down, both ways.

not sure if there is a more recent thread. my camera itself works but the mount appears to be stuck in the out position. Been meaning to spray some WD-40. Anyone else "enjoying" this issue on their 957?

Km1.8t 02-19-2017 08:41 AM

I was able to fix mine by taking it apart and cleaning everything and then putting back together. Mine did the same thing, either would not open or would not retract. If you take it apart, you will be able to retract so it does not look silly driving down the road.

Like Km1.8t said, it would be best to take it apart if you can, clean and re-lubricate everthing with grease. WD-40 would be a very short term fix as it is way too thin and won't penetrate into the little jackscrews much.

I have the same issue on an 08 I bought today. How do you take it apart?

Dumb question, but all 08 turbos don't have reverse cameras do they? Mine doesn't. Would love to add one if there is a kit somewhere.
