Default Trailer towing road trip

Last weekend I took a trip with the Cayenne s to VIR from Ohio thru West Virginia. The CS did an awesome job towing my rase car in a 20' V nose enclosed trailer. Total towing weight was around 7500 lbs. I averaged about 62 mph for 485 miles and got 10.5 mpg. The CS towed like the trailer wasn't even there except in the mountains. On one steeper turning section the stability management engaged as I was braking and I didn't even notice except the light was flashing. The only issue is the brakes. I replaced the pads with EBC yellows and I'm not real happy with them. They dust as bad as oem and don't seem to stop in fact I felt quite a bit of fade on the steeper braking areas.

Yellow stuffs dont advertise less brake dust, I think thats the red stuff which says less brake dust.

These trucks tow nicely. My 08 GTS towed a 5000 lb trailer (steel open with 996 race car packed full of crud + 1 set of wheels on the rack), family of 4 and all of our luggage 2000 miles round trip from California to UT up and down the mountains for the PCA club race. I got 13mpg going about 68 on the way out, and 12mpg going about 76mph on the way back (when I could in the 80mph zones). Most comfortable road trip car ever for all 4 of us!

The OEM brake pads did the job VERY well; why did you go for something different?

Can you give us details about your trailer brake system (i.e. installation, parts, etc.)

Better yet, any photos of the controller (i.e. where you mounted it, does it need to be level...) would be appreciated

I have a pretty stock system. Trailer has brakes on both axles and wiring is thru the prewired system. The brake controller is a prodigy I believe but I will check tomorrow and take a picture of it as well. I don't believe you need to keep the eletronic controllers level. I mounted it left of the steering center line just above where my left leg would be on the underside of the dash.

I was looking for less dust than the OEM and have usually had better luck but unless Hawk comes out with some new pads for the CS I might go back to stock as they were pretty good!

If you were having trouble stopping it sounds like the trailer brake control wasn't set right, or the trailer brakes are bad.

I've towed 7500lbs a few times with my 04 CTT and it still stops on a dime with the brake controller dialed in!!

I didn't have trouble but started to feel some fade in the brakes. I was on a particularly long down hill grade out of the mountains. I attribute it to the pads not the CS. I'm sure I could have dialed in a little more trailer brake!

Many brake controllers have a "boost" feature for such times. Tekonsha I use has 3 separate boost levels. Easy to use with a push of the button. Might give it a try next time on a long downhill grade and see if you reduce the fade feel. It could also be a signal it's time to bleed the brakes and possibly upgrade the brake fluid to a higher boiling point formula.

Mike
I also tow with my CS. Probably have less weight than you- enclosed Trailex 2200lbs and car and gear 3000lbs. I've had zero issues with towing and braking. Took it the the Glen and Road America. Also heading to VIR. I'm on stock pads. Not too much dust and no stopping issues.

Anyone have experience towing with a base cayenne thru the mountains ? Does it have enough HP to climb mountains towing an open trailex trailer with a 911?

Depends on mountains, I drove a friends V6, and I found it did not have enough torque as trans kept hunting to find the right gear. Need to shift manually and keep up the revs. Porsche claims the V6 has same towing capacity as the CS, but there is big difference with power. We were towing a 911 ~ 3300's#'s with guess 1,200 with passengers/gear, while having the 8045 Trailex in tow. Doable, but the V8 is effortless. Of course, the diesel is even better.

I have a base V6 2006 and tow my 2 bikes....but my trailer weighs 250kg and the hayabusa and ninja weigh about 550kg odd totaling 800kgs and the cayenne rows really well. But also average speeds in India are ridiculously low @40kmph......
