Here in Ontario the emission test involves reading the ECU memory. There must be a few days history and they define the parameters for "regular use" during the few days (2 I think). A few days of starting, driving, stopping, accelerating etc... and our computer knows the state of the emission system..... including gas cap integrity....

As an aside, a tank of bad gas can produce a check engine light and an error code that indicates gas cap failure.

3 or 4 metropolitan areas in TN have emissions testing and the Nashville area is one of them. Yes they have a tester for the gas cap and test it. The M3 was just tested last week (and passed), got the paperwork in the mail today for the P!g.
