Default Winter tires or dedicated winter wheels

I am debating whether to just exchange snow tires on my 2013 GTS or get dedicated winter wheels. I live in NYC and go up to Vermont to ski every few weeks. Will swapping tires do any damage to the wheels?

What do most people do as colder weather approaches. I am currently running 20" all season tires.

Thanks

I run a separate set of wheels with dedicated tires for winter. Winter eats good wheels. If you just swap the tires once in the fall for winter and back in the spring there should be no problems. However some machines and or operators seem to be able to damage wheels.

18 inchers offer more protection for the rims and I think more options for snow tires.

I run 20" wheels in the warmer months and 18" wheels with proper winter tires in the colder months.

I live in the same area as you do and I swap my 21"s for 18" wheels in the winter. Over the past two winters I have lost 3 wheels to pot holes. Maybe I'm just a magnet for them or maybe I just live in a bad area. It's for sure cheaper to replace the 18" wheels than the 21s.

If you feel the need for winter tires, get a second set for all the reasons above. We have 2 weeks of what I call massive snow and the all seasons work just fine. I just modify my driving style. Of course I have a Treg so it is better than the P car in the snow...

Narrow tires is always better in snow, so going to smaller and narrower tires/ rims would give best traction in the snow.

I have had a 2004 CS for 10 years in NH.... swapping wheels or tires gets old... went with all season radials on the stock 18" wheels.... just picked up 2014 GTS with stock 20" wheels and all season radials and plan to run them year round....

I would recommend running an 18" set of dedicated winter wheels and tires. The tires will be skinnier and as a result will offer better cutting ability through the snow. The added sidewall height will protect your wheels from potholes also. If you choose to stay with the OEM wheels, the 20" Continental DWS isn't a bad pick. It isn't a snow tire and won't perform as well as one, but it will work well enough to get you through snow if necessary.

Please call me if I can help or if you need to place an order. Thanks.

If you need a snow tire for skiing, get a dedicated snow tire!

I ran dedicated winter tires and wheels on my '08 CS for 2 winters in NJ. I just sold the CS and still have the winter stuff in the garage. See my post listing them for sale if your're interested. I assume the 18's would fit over the GTS brakes.
