2011 Cayenne S or 2013 Diesel
#16
I have a 2012 Cayenne S and a 2013 Cayenne Diesel. I love both. The S is my wife's and the weekend Cayenne. The diesel is my daily driver and I have a 100 mile a day commute. I get about 30MPG.
If I had to pick one, it would be the diesel. It is just amazing having the fuel economy and handling. Also, I have the Bluespark diesel tuning, and I must say, the diesel is almost as fast as the S. I say almost, since you really cannot tell its slower.

When I bought the 335d earlier this year from Louisiana the sales person misrepresented the car: "the closest thing to a new car I have seen" when in fact the bumper was a bit scrapped in one corner and one of the wheels had a chip/curb rash in one spot. Still bought the car since in was a great deal with only 8,500 miles and loaded with every single option except adaptive cruise control. But, had I've done a PPI before I could have got him to lower the price some more.../ end rant

We have owned a 2011 Cayenne S for2.5 years we have driven it 35,000 miles of which over 10,000 have been towing either a 14 ft steel utility trailer or a 22 ft enclosed car trailer. My wife and I could not be happier with the Cayenne. We had a 2008 Cayenne GTS before and the 2011 S is so much better. Better mileage ( 18 in town, up to 25.5 on the highway and 12.5-13 when towing the enclosed car trailer). It is more nimble than the 2008 and the interior is quieter and as my wife has stated " it is really really fast"
That said we have a Cayenne Diesel on order that we should have by the end of the month. I ordered it for her after driving one for several days.
The diesel is every bit as quiet as the "S", no diesel engine sounds. Off the line you can feel the increased torque and it pulls very well up to highway speeds. When passing at highway speeds it does not have the acceleration of the "S" but it is very satisfactory and will quickly get you around other vehicles. Of note our highway speeds are higher than most here in Texas with legal speeds up to 85 mph on selected roads.
Now, for mileage with the Diesel; In the several hundred miles I put on the dealers loaner I got in the 20's in town in stop and go mostly around 25. I have read where owners are getting well over 16 pulling enclosed car trailers AND a member of our PCA region took hers, loaded down, to Parade this year (over 3400 miles round trip) and got over 37 mpg for the trip and she does not have a light foot on the throttle.
While on Parade there were 7 Cayennes in the Parade autocross and one was a diesel. They all did respectable overall.
By the way the diesel is an additional vehicle for my wife and we are keeping the "S"
Hope this helps your decision making

Tires are Michelin all season Latitudes at factory pressure on 19 in wheels. On the highways I normally drive with cruise control on and in auto mode. When towing, especially with the enclosed car trailer ( Trailex) I use manual mode and never above 7th gear. and got 12.7 for a 3600+ mile trip to Parade and back
You didn't ask but I change oil every 5000 miles and in 35,000 miles oil consumption has been about 1/2 quart total. Needless to say I'm very pleased

If you are looking for PTV (or PDCC) and they are important to you, then the diesel is right out of the equation. They aren't available.
I'm a CD fan, but I'd be surprised if you can find one on the used market that has Air (or any/many other options) for $60k. They are still just too new for there to be enough turn over quite yet.

As far as Diesel, the prices are too high for a used 2013, I would have to either order it new or wait an year, not worth it to spend 70K+ for an used Diesel without the options I really want. Unless I change my mind (again) I think I am decided to go for an S.
Having said that, would you spend 65K+ on a 2012 Cayenne S with two-tone natural leather, Premium Plus, etc. BUT without BOSE?

For anyone looking for a nicely equipped Cayenne S and don't mind black, here is a 2012 CPO with 21K miles, they are asking $70,500 and is loaded with Premium Plus, PTV Plus, Full Leather, Panorama, porsche crests everywhere, Tiptronic gear selector aluminum, silver seat belts, BOSE, keyless entry, etc. Original MSRP was $93,785.
Unfortunately for me I don't like black, I do have to recognize I was tempted today to pull the trigger on this but my wife reminded me how much she doesn't like black either and I came to my senses so I am back looking ...

Today I drove a Diesel and the S back to back, again. I have decided that I am going with the S, may need to increase the budget to 70K to get what I want but I am willing to wait for a low mileage "like new" specimen with the options I want.
