Horn Replacement - How to get the dang connectors off?

I posted this question on an existing thread but its been crickets... so, sorry for the redundancy.

I went in through the wheel liner and then got stumped at how to get the connector off the horn. There didn't seem to be anything i could squeeze or pinch to unlatch the tab on the horn that holds it secure. Can someone bail me out?

Here's how it's supposed to work:
Pull outward on the tab in the diamond (picture 1). It will help if you push the entire connector inward while pulling the tab outward with your thumb or finger. This is sometimes unsuccessful, especially if there is dirt caked in the connector. The other way to do it is to insert a pick into the slot at the opposite end of the connector (see arrow in picture 2), and pry the inner portion up. This will release the connector.

Thanks for the pointers... That was such a b!tch.. Well, horns are done but that is not a fun job.

I can't remember the last time I used my horn. No idea if it still works.
Thanks for the info on the connectors though Tim, I just hope I remember the next time I run across connectors like that.

I live in a college town with a lot of international (challenged) drivers.. been missing that horn. A word of caution, though, you may want to start with the rum ahead of time because you'll be cursing like a sailor before you're done with that horn swap.

One of my horns seem to be dead, I can live with it for now.
Cant be less fun than replacing the rear hatch struts ,Did that last week. Another fun Cayenne job.

Ha! I did the hatch struts 2 weeks ago, I know what you mean. Strange thing for me was getting the hatch strut back on was fairly easy but getting those blasted window struts back on was a PITA!

About 3 yrs ago I was on the freeway and a pickup in the outside lane kicked up a piece of 2x4 that was laying on the road, kicked it right up into the LF bumper area of the P!g, I thought for sure it took out the headlight. Wound up it only took out the black grill below the headlight in the "S" bumper. After searching here found out that to replace that grill on the S you have to remove the bumper (on the turbo it can be replaced with the bumper in place) so I had to take off the bumper. If I had known then what I know now I would have upgraded the horns at the same time. Oh well.

IIRC removing the bumper wasn't that difficult a task, maybe easier than trying to access through the wheel-well.

Yeah I almost wished I had removed the bumper. Since it would have been much easier access those buggers. Still, so excited to be able to honk like a maniac now.

My fingertips hurt just thinking about those connectors.

endless_corners 01-30-2013 11:43 AM

Yeah a real genius design.

I just removed the bad horns on my 2008 Cayenne S. Yes, those connectors are a pain....it's fairly difficult to reach through the wheel well and then those damn connectors add to the frustration.

I ordered new horns from SunCoastParts and they showed the replacement horns from 2003-2010 models. However, the horns they sent me didn't even fit. Apparently the 955 horn electrical interfaces are different from the 957 and 958 newer models. So after taking everything apart yesterday.....I had to close it back up and wait to RMA the wrong ones and try to get the right ones....grrrr...

XR4Tim 08-05-2013 01:44 PM

955 and 957 use the same horns. What are the part numbers of the ones they sent you?

nabuhodonosaras 11-23-2014 12:00 PM

Where horn on 955 Turbo

Now i've been pissed big time, removed left wheel plastic cover see no horn, removed right side no horn.
Where the hell are those horns on 955 Turbo, i bet it's different than "S" model course where is "S" model horns, there's intercoolers on Turbo.
Please help hate going muted.
