Default Strange whining noise from 65mph to 80 mph

I have had the 2004 CTT for a few weeks now and just started noticing a whining type noise coming from what seems to be the right side of the car at speeds between 65 and 81mph. At first I thought it might be tire noise as the tires are a bit worn. But the sound goes away when I lift the gas pedal even a little. And when I coast there is no sound. The sound is very even like tire noise would be but it drops in pitch as the speed goes down and vice versa. Completely disappears after 82.
I tried coasting and reving up the engine and no noise so it is only there when power is applied. Any ideas where to start looking? I thought I would have the tires rotated just to eliminate that possibility but that wont happen for a few days.
Thanks
Eric

Was you wife with you? Or perhaps one of your kids who doesn't like speed or acceleration?

If the sound is coming from the engine compartment, it may be one of your turbos acting up. Try driving around town at the same highway engine speed when you had noticed the sound being more prominent. This way, you may be able to pinpoint the source of noise.

Strange whining?

Well, you're in the right place for strange whining.

There's whining about crack coils, about cardan shafts, about hatch lifts, about beta models and '03's, about coolant pipes, heck, they even whine about the shape.

Strange whining is a celebrated art form here.

You've hit the mother load of strange whining.

I don't think it's in the engine area, seems to be right front but as always I could be wrong. Driving around town here at hwy speed...hmmm, sounds like fun! Maybe roll down the window and get my wife to hang outside and listen? Wouldn't turbo noise show up under hard acceleration?

I'll rotate tires first just to be sure.

Thanks
Eric

It's true I haven't been around long, but if you think the whining around here is strange then you should check out the BMW 1 and 3 series forums. I swear they believe they deserve a brand new car when they get a chip in their windshield. Shopping cart bumps their car (no scratch needed), well that's a total loss.

It really is bad in those parts and I'm glad to move over here to slightly more sanity

So it looks like my coasting test has revealed that this is an engine/drivetrain issue according to a quick search on how to diagnose these types of sounds. Tires and bearings would continue to make noise while coasting apparently. So since the sound disappears while coasting...we will see

Unusual bearings, quirky differentials and even unsprung coils form a unique symphony:

Since day-1 the transfer case on my '05S has been noisy. Pretty much as you describe. Whining noise at higher speeds and gets quiet when off-throttle.

I was just coming home listening to this issue and wondering if I am worrying about nothing. If it wasn't for how quiet it is in the cockpit i dont think i would have even noticed. Youre making me feel better and I thank you for that.
