Saw that today. Looks interesting. Nobody mentions turbo lag. Because it is not there, or because they are promoting a new product? I have no idea. Chris Harris needed here.

I preferred AutoWeek when it was AutoWeek instead of Auto every-other Week, as it is today.

It's not there. Diesels develop torque much faster than petrol engines. The max torque curve on this one is between 1750 and 2750 RPMs. So while at speed - and through the gears getting there - the turbo is for all practical purposes always "spun up". On two lane blacktop, you can select Sport Mode. I occasionally see 7th gear in Sport mode (on TLB) but usually it's 4-5-6. And in 6th gear at 55 mph, it's turning the same 1950 revs. It's fun.

I love the in-gear acceleration of a diesel.. it always feels like there is something there. I had my little 1.9l jetta tdi tuned up to 200hp/300 ft lbs... so I bet there is a ton of tuning potential with these 3.0l diesels too. An easy 35hp/70ftlbs from just a tune, if I had to guess. I wonder if anyone in europe has hopped these up with bigger turbo/injectors.. I'm gonna head to tdiclub and check what the touareg kids have done.

Just a quick look (read I have no knowledge of them beyond Google results) finds ChipExpress which boasts 280/468 and uses an adapter that plugs into the wiring harness rather than flashing your ECU. The BMW guys do this type of thing for their turbos and you just pull it and clear any codes before you take it to the shop. The BMW options are pretty quick to add/remove and just a quick look at this one it seems pretty straight forward too.

How? To detect an ECU remap, the dealer would have to initiate their own remap - AND - detect a version other than their own. How often do you think that happens?

Indeed. Tuner boxes, however, can be unplugged and don't leave a trace. Ultimately a dyno based custom tune would be the best. But tuner boxes are a good bet for warranty concerns. It's definitely an area to do due dilegence. But the difference can be felt and is even more sporty so it would be tempting to me.

Old news. I'm talking 2013. Second generation Caynne/Touareg/Q7 could in fact be flashed through the OBD port. Plug-in boxes worked as well. But starting with MY2011, they started encrypting the ECUs (in the diesels anwyay). Only way to remap a 2011+ is to remove the ECU and flash it on the bench.

Don't know about Porsche since I doubt there aren't many Turbo owners tweaking their maps, but there are reports of BMW dealers being so anti-tuner that they like to re-flash ECU by policy. It also doesn't help that BMW releases ECU updates relatively frequently (our 07 328 has had 6), but I also don't know how frequently Porsche issues ECU updates.

The ChipExpress site I posted the link to above claims to work for US Spec engines which means MY2013. Again, I have no first hand knowledge beyond what their website says.

No, it doesn't. Cayenne II is up through MY2010. If you've got a 2013, it's 3rd generation

Sorry, it's a page up that says US Spec which links to the page I posted. I'm not saying you're wrong since I have no direct knowledge at this point, just pointing out what they are advertising.

I see why you're interpreting it that way. Just be careful. Since introduced, the Cayenne has been given three model designators: 955 (2002-2006), 957 (2007-2010), and 958 (2011-present). The 958 ECU is encrypted, which is why any tuner box I've investigated so far won't work. Same with the ECU flash, encryption blocks it. Only way I've found so far to get around it is a bench flash. So if you determine that this outfit has broken the encryption, let me know - I might be interested in one myself.
