<strong>M758,

Maybe, "purist" is the right word for you. "Rigid" might be another. You seem to have trouble with the idea that a vehicle might cross your rather strict class definitions.

For example, by your definitions, the new Range Rover is part truck, part luxury sedan, part minivan, part station wagon, etc, etc.

Why the furor over cross-over or hybrid vehicles?</strong></font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva">Anir,
It is my honest belief that vehicles should be designed around a single major purpose. Other abilties should be considered a "bonus" or product differentiator. Vehicle or products in general desigend to be good and many things are typically only ok and really good at none. TO me it is "Jack of all trades, Master of None!" Syndrome. This is not really all that bad for the Fords and GMs of the world, but it is NOT right for a specialized company like Porsche.

The other thing that bothers me is that 10-20 years ago when you bought an SUV you knew it could perform off road. Now that is lacking. In fact you need to wade through the crap of 30-40 models that really suck just to find one that is OK. While on-road abilites have improved over that time the off-road capabilties have suffered. Sure that is fine for the average guy who does not need it, but for those that do the pickings are getting slim. Now that the Cherokee (XJ) is dead there is one fewer really capable vehicles out there. The Liberty replacement is just not as good. The Current Wrangler (TJ) is still great, but we have, in my opinion, lost that intermediate SUV option. That to me is very sad.

The other thing is that I see people buying trucks that by their basic intended purpose are not as good as cars on the road. They then want them to be as good. So either the buy a "truck" that only "looks like" a truck or buy a "truck" and complain when it gets poor mileage, rides rough, and rolls in a turn. In fact these people would have been much better served by buying real car. Instead the auto makers in effort to make money. Just start to remove truck features.

The Hummer H2 is an perfect example. The H1 was designed strictly for a purpose. It was very hardcore and look cool because of it's single mided dedication to the purpose. Of course the price of that dedication was crappy on-road performance. The few the bought them found this out rather quick, but at least they "looked" cool. Of course there are a select few non-military buyers that actually used the H1's capabilties.

Now allong comes GM and the desire for money. The answer make the Hummer H2, A look alike H1 on suburban chaissis. The idea is simple. Make it look tough like the H1, but give it all creature comforts of a Suburban. I can't really fault GM for trying to make money, but I can fault the people for being suckered in to spenind 60 grand. Sure it as more off-road capabilities that most other SUV's, but that is not saying alot given the current crop. It is still a far cry from the H1.

I consider the H2 a dummed down version of the H1.

Now where does the C fit. Well to me Porsche has taken the GM route to build something purely for image rather than performance. Sure it will perform well on the road, but I really only average at best for things SUV's are still today bougth for, Hauling (either people or stuff), Towing, and even if people never do it off-roading. What is is major claim. The fastest SUV! Wow kind-of funny since most people buy SUV's for the 3 major issues above even if they really will never use all of those capabilies. If people want speed and handling they look to sedans or sports car. Sure it is "nice" to have an SUV that does 170 mph on the autobahn, but it is surely not required. Now for a sports car 170 mph is trully badge of honor. Proclaiming you made a "sports car" with is best feature is the ability to haul a 4x8 sheet of plywood seems stupid and analogous to the way the Cayenne and X5 have been designed and marketed.

BTW: I perfer "Purist" to "Rigid" just like P-seller perfers "Composites" to "Plastics" <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I don't think the Cayenne or X5 tout the ability to carry a 4x8 sheet of plywood, for that you need a pick-up truck. And a surprising few can do that either!

You could maybe strap it on top of the Cayenne but it would probably start shaking at 80 or 90 and rip off and go flying at 150

I have my lumber delivered

You state your position very eloquently, and make many good points. If I lived closer to Arizona, I'd meet up with you so that you could teach me a few things in the Range Rover (and help me "break it in" properly).

Have a great weekend.

Hmm,
That sure does look small. Kind of like the size of my jeep cherokee.

I thought it would be bigger!

Well, just because I can, here are some of my pics from Birmingham.

On track
<img src="http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid49/pc98b66545fde081d76e661265563933f/fcb4ff26.jpg" alt=" - " />

I can't believe how crappy the Range Rover performed. Yes, it's comfortable, yes it rides nice, but I've felt less body roll in a loaded cube van.
<img src="http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid49/p310c356972f9740bb6193a05ad4ca61a/fcb4ff14.jpg" alt=" - " />

<img src="http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid49/pf4a6a2597cc5107b419c74e66615454a/fcb4ff11.jpg" alt=" - " />
<img src="http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid49/p3ab8c6371ecf7b4831fd1075eb0c0386/fcb4ff03.jpg" alt=" - " />

For a height comparison, I'm 6'6".
<img src="http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid49/pca80c07e23da196ccea0ba01712ee7d3/fcb4fbef.jpg" alt=" - " />

Now obviously, there will never be an agreed concensus on the looks. You either like it or hate it. I liked it in the pictures, and I think it looks even better in person. Now, looks aside, the Cayenne is outstanding when it comes to performance.

I've worked for BMW and have had a chance to drive an X5 extensively. I've spend a lot of time in various X5's, Mercedes ML's, and Rande Rovers. None of them hold a candle to the Cayenne in terms of handling, braking, or acceleration. As for offroad abilities, I have a Jeep Cherokee, 4" lift, lockers. I've done serveral Jeep Jamborees and trail rides. The Cayenne is more capable offroad. We did things with it that would make my Jeep roll.

As for the interior fit and finish issues that people have mentioned. There's only one way to put this. Give your heads a shake. The build quality easily equals and in some ways, surpasses that of the 986 and the 996. And compared to the Touerag we had at our autoshow last weekend, the Cayenne looks to be built a hundred times better.

Anyway, I know that nothing I or anyone else says can sway the diehard anti-Cayenne nuts. However, I am interested to see how many of you will be driving Cayennes in a few years. Everyone that owns a Porsche needs a second vehicle for hauling around the kids or the dog or towing the boat or whatever. I'm willing to bet that in a couple of years, most everyone here will have a Cayenne. Even around here, several of the anti-Cayenne customers have now left deposits.

Anyway, whatever.

Still butt ugly.,,,interesting that the seats are Identical to the seats in the VW Toureg....it would be interesting to see what Porsche Parts and VW parts Department price these seats at...Methinks the VW version might be cheaper (even though its the same seat)

Returned from my trip to Geneva. Man, that was a great experience. Brought some pics with me which I want to share with you.

There were the usual suspects at the Porsche display...:

<img src="http://wager.bei.t-online.de/Neuer%20Ordner/rennlist/Porsche%20Cayenne1.jpg" alt=" - " />

...which received thumbs up from Formula One race driver Michael Schumacher's manager Willi Weber (center)...

...something to calm the temper of the self-proclaimed Porsche hardcore fans...:

<img src="http://wager.bei.t-online.de/Neuer%20Ordner/rennlist/porschegt3.jpg" alt=" - " />

...there was even something for those with big pockets...:

<img src="http://wager.bei.t-online.de/Neuer%20Ordner/rennlist/Porsche%20GT03.jpg" alt=" - " />

<img src="http://wager.bei.t-online.de/Neuer%20Ordner/rennlist/Porsche%20GT04.jpg" alt=" - " />

<img src="http://wager.bei.t-online.de/Neuer%20Ordner/rennlist/porschegt02.jpg" alt=" - " />

...although in the highspeed section I liked this baby most...:

You're a Porsche salesman, no? Call it a wild, shot-in-the-dark guess.

If the Cayenne gets a serious facelift, you might be right. Otherwise, I wouldn't hold your breath. BTW, many of us feel that the interior quality of the 996 and 986 leaves a bit to be desired.

Honestly, when choosing a truck / SUV, how many people rate track capabilities as a top priority? I think most folks care more about people and cargo hauling ability, towing capacity, comfort, looks, etc, etc. That's one of the fundamental issues I see with the Cayenne. It's a commendable effort, but very likely an expensive and ugly answer to the question that nobody asked.

ngfan,

Thanks for the great pics, especially of the Carrera GT and GT3. Now, those are interesting Porsches! <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />
