Good deal on 05 CS??
Looking at a 2005 Cayenne S. Silver 109k miles. Cardon shaft, coolant pipes and starter done recently. One owner, clean carfax. Has Air ride suspension but no nav. system :/ No leaks under the rig. Owner says the transmission seal is good, no leaks. I'm going for a test drive tomorrow. Owner asking for 16k. What should I offer?? Is there anything else I should look out for on the test drive?
Oh yeah, apparently it's burning oil between changes. Owner said about a quart every 1000 miles ( does this sound right? I know Cayenne's tend to burn oil ) I called the local Porsche certified mechanic and he said, burning oil is a sign that the car wasn't driven hard. . . OK
Finally, is it impossible to find and upgrade to a nav. system? You guys are the pro's, thanks for your input!

San Francisco Bay Area, prices are high. 16k is the most affordable 05 on the market, and I've been looking for awhile. The biggest draw for me was the air ride. It sounds funny, but I figured since this was my first Porsche, I'd rather spend less and test the waters; the last thing I want to do is spend 40k on one and find it to be a bucket of problems. Thanks for the post!

You're better off without the built-in nav: from what I've read here the early ones are a pain in the *** to update.
Price sounds about right. I have an '05 V6 with just over 100k on the clock and my indy offered me $13k trade-in value on an '08 S. It sounds like you've asked all the right questions and that you got all the right answers. You should easily get your money's worth out of it.
As with any vehicle at that age and mileage, you're going to have problems. Quite simply: **** starts to wear out with normal use. Expect it, anticipate that repairs are going to cost you more than fixing a Chevy and enjoy your truck!

The CS's aren't known for burning a lot of oil (turbos yes). I would walk from this one. Just my .02.
My '06 CS w/ 65k mi. uses less than 1/4 qt. in 7,500 mi.

Double checked the email from the seller and they said it burns a little less than half a quart every 1000 mi, so not quite as bad. I'm going to have a mechanic do a bore scope of the cyl jugs, as suggested. If they are fine, I guess it means a leak somewhere else. I wonder if it's a valve cover leak and it's evaporating on the manifold. . I'll do a search and see if that's even possible. Thanks for the help!

Nope
If it was dripping oil onto the manifold you would smell it for sure.
My 06 with 80k uses no perceptible amount of oil between changes.
Does not sound good to me.

In my experience., a "seller's recollection" is almost always short of reality, so it might be a lot worse than you are being told. A non-turbo should not burn that much oil, regardless of age or mileage. A modern day V8 from pretty much any luxury manufacturer should easily go 200k or more miles before it starts burning that kind of oil (unless the engine has been neglected or there is a major leak somewhere). For comparison purposes, my '06 Turbo (which is know for burning oil) has only burned 0.5 quart in the first 2200 miles I have owned it. It now has ~90k on the clock.

Leaking from valve cover gaskets, while making a bit of a mess, does not actually cause a significant oil level loss. If it were losing 1 qt. every 5k mi. from the valve covers you would have a major mess under that car and wherever it parked/stopped you would know about it.

The price is almost too low for an '05 with air.. I think the seller has priced it so he wont feel guilty. Still I can see why aside from the oil it seems really attractive.. since all the other items were repaired and its cheap as heck. What if it needed a rebuilt engine at some point in the next year (not saying it will). Are you prepared to take care of that without remorse?
