Default To aftermarket backup sensors or not

Purchased for my wife a low mileage 2010 cayenne with the sport package that includes the GTS bumpers. She wants the backup sensors like her last car since there is no backup camera I kind of agree since she has a history of backing into things. The local Buick dealer says they put them on all the time, the Porsche dealer, a couple of hours away, said that he would look into the factory sensors but doesn't think it will work with my car. So install aftermarket in the factory location or not or trade the wife.

Trading the wife is an option - but after all - she did agree to a Cayenne, so she might be a keeper.

I added a rear video camera to my /S.. used a PEAK one from Autozone - about $80. Mounted the tiny monitor in the eyeglass cubby. It's useful, but not wonderful (part of that has to do with my near vision..)

PDC's would be a really nice thing to add, and I considered it. There are roughly 1x10+6 sellers offering these on Ebay. Most are in China. There are even ones that come prepainted (in more or less generic car colors.) Mounting them in the rear bumper shouldn't be that hard (they come with a Forstner bit to drill nice clean holes) - mounted about where Porsche put theirs. You could then mount the display - if it's a simple LED one with green/yellow/red lights where Porsche put the one for the rear on the Cayenne - mounted under the rear hatch opening top trim. And it would be easy enough to make it turn on with the reverse light since the reverse light power is right in the left/right side compartments (I tapped it in the right side one for the reverse camera.)

I think you'll end up having to take the bumper cover off to do the job - and line up the holes for the sensors with holes in the real aluminum bumper that's under the bumper cover. Since I haven't R&R'd mine, I can't say how big a job it would be - but probably less of a job then it was running the camera wiring from the tailgage to the inside of the truck..

I'm still giving this some thought.. If you decide to do it - take lots of photos.. Front sensors I can't speak to.. haven't given it a lot of thought, but usually I'm pretty good pulling forward.

I am going to have a rear set put in next week - am not going to DIY as the dealer threw in $350 towards the project as part of the sale. I'll post pictures / final cost when done.

Car has been dropped off at Porsche for non-Porsche sensors to be installed. Should have it back tomorrow with a full report.

They gave me a 2010 Panamera as a loaner. I might not give it back!

Just picked up the car - the install looks quite nice and clean. Not sure if the dealer covered to total cost or not - they pledged $350.
Control in the driver's footwell.

Sensors - I got 4 total.

What does the control in the footwell do? Is the system tied to the reverse lights so it comes on automatically? And is there a display of any type - or just a sonar like audio warning?

The footwell switch is for the forward sensors. When in drive normaly you want it off. Otherwise it sees all sorts of issues. The reverse sensors are only on when in reverse.

Sounds good! Do these sensors have a visible display or just audio?
