Any Cayenne's towing 26 Foot Travel Trailers?
 

Quick question...

Anyone here have or know of a Cayenne (or Touareg) owner that is towing a 26 foot travel trailer?

Really curious about the ole' trailer wagging the Pepper/Egg issue because of the short wheel base of the German vehicles...

The weights are fine - just worrying about the "length"...

My S pulls my 5K pound 21 foot trailer like there's nothing back there.

As a comparison, I have to run sway control and a weight distributing hitch to pull the same trailer with my Land Rover Discovery.

Just about all of those travel trailers, especially 26 footers, are aerodynamic nightmares. Even if the weights check out, I would be really hesitant due to the sheer size of those things swaying in the wind.

Combine that with the Pepper's limited tongue weight and I wouldn't even attempt it without weight distribution and sway control.

What's a 26 foot traveler weigh? 5-6K pounds dry? At least you wouldn't have to worry about finding a bathroom on the road...

Purchased a 2010 25FB Classic Limited Airstream and have been towing it with a Pro Pride hitch on a 2010 diesel powered "T-Rex" and it's been "GREAT"!!!!

The "Classic Limited" Airstream being the "top" of the Airstream model line (Sport-FlyingCloud-International-ClassicLimited) it weighs in at 5,900 lbs dry... Granted it has "Disc" brakes - it stops on a dime and tows like a dream due to its very low center of gravity and streamline design.

Over Mountains, through valleys, tight twisty roads, gusty winds, the Airstream, Pro-Pride & German SUV are a great match!!!

I've been pulling a 24' enclosed Haulmark thrity car hauler for about 4 years now. First, behind an '04 Cayenne S, then behind an '06 Cayenne Turbo and now behind an 08' Cayenne GTS (with a manual transmission no less!). All have had NO problems with sway, and I have towed in some pretty stiff winds. The car can handle it.

I tow a 22' 2002 Airstream International AS with my V10 Treg. Trailer allegedly weighs 4200lbs empty with a 480lb tongue weight. I think the trailer is closer to 5k lbs and has a heavier tongue weigh than reported as we have the optional protector shields up front. I'd say it's well over 500lb on the tongue. The Treg tows it with no problem and obviously is no challange for the V10 engine. I just use a simple ball mount and ball, the air suspension does the rest. The shorter wheel base can be felt when whipping it into a curve on a canyon road at speed. The ass end will feel like it wants to push out on the Treg. I've also towed the same trailer with a '98 ML320 and '03 ML500. Both of those cars did fine as well although the 320 was really taxed with the weight. I used a weight distro hitch on those two. Airstreams do tow very nicely. Heck, people used to pull these things with sedans and station wagons back in the day.

BTW, what is the tongue weight on that 25' Classic? That's what I'd be worried about. Airstreams are fairly heavy in the tongue and generally the 25' and larger versions are too heavy in the tongue for our midsize SUVs. Treg and Cayenne are only good for 660lbs.

Peppers & T-Rex's are good at 7,700 lbs and 770 lbs tongue weight - if you have a sticker on your OEM hitch that says otherwise you can get a new one. No One knows why for a few model years the sticker was down-rated but folks have received new ones from both VW & Porsche. My 2005 Cayenne S sticker on the OEM hitch said "770 lbs" & my 2010 Touareg sticker on its OEM hitch says "770 lbs"... The Audi Q7 is only 667 tongue lbs (or something close to that).

The Trailer before weight distribution hitch is 780 lbs tongue (a bit more with the front rock guards I'm sure) but with the ProPride Hitch I'm sitting at 650 lbs. as determined via scales.

Toby - I think you posted this a few years back but let me ask again - what is your tongue weight and total weight (trailer, car, etc.)?

A friend of mine is looking at a similar setup for his RS... :)

Tongue weight is around 500 pounds. Trailer empty weighs 3700 pounds. Car weighs 2292. Max trailer weight for the axles is 7000 pounds. I still have room for another 1000 pounds of "stuff" to lug to the track.

Cayenne Towing

I have towed 24' Cobalt and 22.5' Grady White (both with trailers are close to 30' overall). With fuel pushing 7000#, over Cascade and Rocky Mtn Ranges. Very good tow vehicle.

The cordon shaft bearing is a known wear item that should be monitored and replaced as necessary. What's the mileage on your Cayenne?

Sorry to hear about that. Hope you were close to home when the center bearing went out. Look up the "Jimi fix". Its a cheap and easy DIY repair for the center bearing.
