Converting to RWD?
Curious..... Some 993 Turbo guys have converted their AWD cars to RWD for more performance. In the case of the Cayenne, how hard would it be to do the same?
I'm not looking for a performance argument as the weight reduction would be a drop in the bucket on the P!g. I'm thinking of the case where a naked owner has a front diff. or transfer case failure and wants to postpone service.
What would be involved in removing the front cardan shaft and differential?
What systems are affected and what kinds of MILs would you get?
Just curious.....

spoke to some official P car people when I thought it was going to be $2400 for the part and not in the budget with the holidays coming. All agreed the only downside to leaving it was loss of 4wd. Dont think I could have told the wife she got a brand new diff for xmas. I am more curious to open up the old box to see what went wrong than to have the p!g fixed.

I found this unit on Craigslist in SF and sent a pelican to look at it for me. Currently there are 2 on evilbay for around a grand. Watch the one in Cananda. he is a bit obnoxious and not forthcoming with part numbers but it is a supposedly "new" unit. There are three different units each with a different ratio.
low speed crunching in r/f wheel, especially in reverse with high angle steering inputs. During a nice punch you can feel gear slip and the shaft to the l/f wheel actually starts to flop around. Nice thumping. Had the pig on a lift, pulled the PSM relays, had a guy at each wheel. No noise in either upright or wheel. Plenty o crunching inside the case. My guess is there is a gear stripped causing the slippage and has egged out a bushing or bearing from the hammering. I will let ya know when I get the old box out and opened up. Even the porsche techs wanna come see as it is highly unusual so far with this model. Still have no ideas why tho, pig is wifes daily driver, my DE tow vehicle. No real hammering or off road stuff. Just towing. We shall see. box came yesterday. todays the day for the repair.
