Cayenne Tail Light Replacement

Does anyone know the trick to removing the tail light to replace a bulb. According to the manual and I quote. "Removing tail light.
Because of the design, a relatively large amount of effort is required to remove the tail light. In cases of doubt contact a qualified specialist workshop."
I had it unbolted and pulled so hard I thought I was going to snap something off. I was afraid I would break it and be out a lot more money than the cost a bulb. Come on, do I really have to go to the dealer to replace a tail light bulb?
Help please.

Start by ordering one of the plastic clips that hold the tail light into the metal bracket.
Almost every time that I need to remove a Cayenne tail light, these things break.
Part nr is 955.631.471.01.

I use a plastic screwdriver to push the tail light out of the holder.

Thanks Gert. I'll order the plastic piece.

The tail light comes out easy..two screws a little wiggle/nudge of the assembly and you're free. You'll see where the two screws are when you lift the tailgate. Just be careful when you pull it out so you dont scratch the bumper (they're on pretty tight). Never heard of needing to replace any special parts. I had to take mine on and off a few times.

Nice to know info, just hope I remember it when it comes time to replace a bulb. Thanks, and thanks to Gert for P/N info.

I took the screws out...that was easy. But I was tugging pretty hard and the light didn't want to come out. I'll go give it another try.

Well that was easy once you guys gave me the push. Love this forum! I put duck tape around the light over the bodywork to give me some added confidence. Pulled the heck out of it and pop off it came. Thanks guys. 10 minute job once you have the guts.

You gave me the courage to pull like a thousand wild white horses, and it came out. Easy peasy after that.

Put some silicone grease back on the knob, it may make it easier next time.
I have done a couple for a friend's 07 CS, i used a plastic trim remover to help lever off, but next time i will try the big tug

Spin spin spin

Trying to replace brake bulb on 06 Cayenne. Bottom bolt came out fine. Top is just spinning and spinning. Can't tighten or loosen. Guessing the nut snapped off the assembly. Pulled it, pushed it and tried torqueing every way, no luck. So, other than drilling through the head of the bolt, any suggestions? Now I have a burned out brake light and a rattling assembly.

I have an 04 turbo and have replaced tail light bulbs 4 or 5 times. Here is a little trick that makes removal easier.
After unscrewing the two retainer screws insert a small paint stir stick between the outer fender and the front edge of the tail light assembly. Gently pull the assembly out from the inside using the stir stick as a soft wedge. It allows the ball connector to release straight and does not mar the fender paint.

Hey Gert, I broke one of the plastic clamps. Do you get them from the dealer or online?

Thanks!

Gert 02-22-2013 03:51 AM

Any Porsche dealer can supply this.
These cost $1 each.
