Reversing Camera

Anyone heard of, or have own experience with installing a Reversing camera on a 2004 Cayenne?
Was it possible to order this as an option for the 2004 model?
Is the cables to the camera in the harness from factory?
Guess I need a AV module upgrade to the PCM as well. Can this be upgraded?

Any ideas appreciated.
:)

they are a nice option, but the motors are constantly causing problems, sticking, ex.
I have had mine in 3 times to get re lubbed and finally they just replaced.

Nice option, but I wish it was fixed, like lexus and other.....
I get the point of concealing it, for dust and keeping the lens clean, but that is just one more part that can now break.

I have an 2008 S model and had an after market rear view camera installed at the dealer. I looked at the Porsche version and did not like it because of the downward looking angle. The after market cameras are better and look backwards for a better field of view. It activates automatically when the car is shifted into reverse or manually via the AV button on the PCM.

It was not available as a 2004 option - I doubt retro-fitting one would be very easy...

What brand aftermarket?

BuzzBomb, give us some more info. What was the brand? Any pictures as to where the camera is installed? What did you pay?

More info!

Some additional info (More soon)

Sorry guys for the lack of information,

I am on a trip and will post more info and pics this weekend. I negotiated the camera and installation as part of the original purchase with the dealer.

The camera is mounted in a chrome license plate bracket and is adjustable in a tilt mount which is hardly noticable. The wires are run up through the standard wiring harness holes and are not visible. The camera is a Sony and the video controller unit connects to the PCM. It also has a second video input if you want to run a DVD player but I did not use that connection.

So far I am very happy with it and have been using it almost a year now. Everybody comments on the high quality color resolution and it has worked flawlessy. The picture automatically turns on when the transmission is placed in reverse or you can manually turn it on using the AV button if not moving (Stop light or just parking). It turns off as soon as the car goes forward in motion so you cannot use it while driving.

I will post specs and pics soon.

Thanks,

ya, I can't really stand my stock one on my GTS.
I agree it is wonderful if attaching a trailer, and yes, I would be able to see a small child when up close....but I like the fixed versions like Lexus makes and we have on our GS450h and GX470 100 times more.

Post some pics from your display inside the car when reversing and post some pics on what it looks like from exterior when you ahve a chance.

What is the exact model number/type so I can possilbe research it.
I might actually scrap my original camera for something better if it's easy enough.

can you tell I don't exactly like what the OEM is capable of? :)

7 Attachment(s)
The maker of the rear view camera kit is HitchCam at www.hitchcam.com. I have attached the spec sheet and some pictures from my CS08. Key features include the following:

150 degree wide angle camera lense
Hi resolution Sony CCD camera
IP68 waterproof construction
Extreme low light performance
Tilt bracket for camera
Stainless chrome license plate bracket

These pictures are using the AV function while in park. The camera turns on automatically when the car is placed into reverse.

nice, wish mine was that, rather than OEM

Thanks buzzbomb. I have been looking for a rear view camera for quite a while for my 08 CS and I could not find one that integrates so well. How much did the dealer charge you?

BuzzBomb 05-14-2008 03:49 AM

When I negotiated my purchase price the added camera was not itemized. However, I believe I gave about a $900 credit (parts and labor) for its value in the deal. At that time, it was less than what I would have paid for the Porsche camera option. I have not checked prices lately so may be able to get the same equipment or newer version for even less.

My dealer was really great during the process. They coordinated the installation with a local Audio Visual specialist and signed off on the installation so the after market addition would not impact any Porsche warranties.

I have heard of other dealers taking a similar approach for other types of interior customizations. It can be very helpful if you have a local dealer that is willing to go that extra mile.

I guess that I need an AV module in my 04 Cayenne S in order to connect the video signal from the camera?
Do I need anything else installed in my car do you think? I mean DVD module, or any other things from Porsche?

Is it the wireless system you have got installed, BuzzBomb?

BuzzBomb 05-21-2008 03:59 PM

I had the preferred package plus which includes the PCM 2.1. I do not believe you need anything else. The camera kit comes with the controller unit, the brackets, and the camera.
