Default TOW Vehicle

Does the Cayenne S make a good tow vehicle?

I know what it's rated at for towing, but does any tow an open trailer with their track car on a regular basis?

I see quite a few tow there car to the track with a Cayenne. So it can do it. It's just not the best suited for it.

This is a topic that has been discussed to death here in the forum. Do a search and you will find multiple threads. The early models had issues with the trailer lights, especially the LED variety. The Cayenne is an excellent tow vehicle...the threads previously posted will clue you in on all the details, though.

He may have gotten scared away already...

And multiple personalities to go along with them.

AFAIK, the 1D8 factory towbar control module, hasn't been redesigned from the 1D6 module, so I believe that LED trailer lights are still a "!".
If this has changed (restraining order prevents me from getting within 100yds of a Cayenne), could someone please chime in?

I wouldn't say 'excellent'. It's a fairly short wheelbase, unibody, transmission does not have a 'tow' mode......it's capable and competent (lighting excluded), but it sure is not a cowboy cadillac, dual rear wheel, crew cab, solid axle, diesel.......

If he got scared away that easily, he would never have survived ownership.

My 04 Touareg with air suspension was a killer tow vehicle. Nearly as stable as my long wheelbase extended cab pickup, and the air suspension worked to reduce bouncing and also could lower the ball height - my tilt back trailer then had a very low angle of entry to allow scrape free loading. I wired it using Hoppy adapters and bypassed all the factory lighting issues

I have owned several Ford pickups and the Cayenne does remarkably well compared to all but the largest of the diesel pickups. The brakes are excellent and the engines are more powerful than the gas engines in the F250 series. I have had no issues with lighting but I have an 08 and I suspicion that my boat trailers do not have LED lights. I have repeatedly towed a 24' Cobalt over mountain passes and had no issues; total weight of boat and trailer with fuel and accessories approx 7000#. A great tow vehicle for it's relatively compact size. The air suspension works very well and the backup camera is a plus for lashing up the hitch without multiple attempts.

Following the tradition established in the Racing/DE forum, I will not discuss:
1. Tow vehicles
2. Oil Viscosity
3. Head and Neck Restraints.

Black holes.

It is generally stated that a properly configured trailer/brake controller should NOT rely on the tow vehicle's braking system in normal operation; the trailer brakes should perform the majority of the work so the vehicle brakes perform as if it were unloaded.

OK, theoretically correct but the surge brakes that come on most boat trailers seem to assist the stopping rather than completely take care of it. Would you advise replacing the surge brakes with electric brakes?
My point was that towing the heavy boat with the Cayenne feels safe and seems to stop reasonably quickly even in mountain pass situations, better in fact than the F250 brakes.
