Default DIY V6 OIL CHANGE

Did anyone ever do one? I was scouting around under there and see there's 2 plastic belly plates, one in the front and one under transmission. Wondering which one (or two) have to come off to access drain plug and filter housing.

BTW, anyone ever notice that hunting down M1 0W-40 is difficult at all the likely sources, NAPA, Kragen, WalMart, AutoZone, etc...?? There are several filters available locally, Purolator, Fram... or I can get one from the stealer.

Anyone have any pictures or diagrams showing relative location of plug/filter? Left, right, up, down...

Otherwise I'll just put it on ramps pull both belly plates off and check it out, the front plate appears to be more complex to remove involving removal of other pieces.

I ended up taking it to the dealer. 6 quarts at $5/qt for 0W-40 Mobil1 and $15 for a filter, less than an hour of labor. My dealer advertises $99 oil changes frequently in the PCNA mailer that goes out with your dealer info on it. I was going to do it but $100 is not worth my time for a DIY that I would need to learn from scratch on a vehicle that I will not keep for but 1 more oil change (leased). For the V8 I might do it myself since it takes 2 oil filters and over 9 qts of oil plus a bit more labor.

I think it is a great idea to ALWAYS do your own maintenance mainly because it makes you that much closer to your vehicle AND it really is not a big job. I am not sure why you cannot find the oil-it is not an uncommon oil. I would NEVER use a Fram or Purolator filter. They are crap. Buy Wix or Nappa-which is a Wix rebranded.

Why not spend the $15 for the OEM filter? Agree, the oil is not hard to find. Just not stocked as frequently since it is not sold as much.

BOTH PANS need to come off and youll need a 19mnm wrench and a 36 mm socket and about 20lbs of oil dry for the mess you make when you take off the filter.

the v8s only have 1 filter they do have 2 drains thorugh

Thanks for the clarification Brad. When I looked into the DIY for the V6 I realized very quickly that my time was worth paying the dealer $100. This is not a simple oil change like on the 996.

lol... my dealer wants $250

Unfortunately It doesn't sound like my '69 Chevy with a small block, 10 minutes tops.

There HAS to be a way to contain the mess. In the old days when you had a horizontally mounted filter you'd just punch the filter case with a screwdriver to let the oil run out slowly. Granted the Cayenne has a filter "cartridge" and a permanent outer housing but there must be SOME technique here...

And there's "something" about doing your own oil changes and rotations, I guess it's something to do with not relying on others. When I have time to get the oil changes it always seems like i have better things to do. What am I going to do for 4 or 5 hours waiting for my car? Have an employee of mine give me a ride back to the office? Or if the stealer drops me off at the office then I need to find a ride back later...
Sure would save grief if they'd just pitch me the keys to a 997 for the afternoon

You could always use a topsider (fluid extractor). That is how I had to change the oil in my last SUV (ML430).

But dear God, what are they charging for labor? 2 hours worth???? What a bunch of crooks. Hell, my 20K service at my dealer was on $295.

Yeah, $250 for the 10k (oil change) and $650 for 20K

And I have a feeling they're going to tell me the brakes need to be replaced. I drive a lot "in town" and on SoCal freeway traffic.

I want to prepare by ordering rotors and pads from suncoast to bring in to the dealer.

ANYONE KNOW torque settings for plug and the 36mm nut?
