Default Radar Detector and Laser Jammer Install

Hey all....
Well....if I dont' get a radar detector installed in this rocket, I'm going to wind up in jail !

The optimal idea was to do the front and rear K40 Remotes, with the laser jammers front and rear. Well...that sounds like a great plan until you get both the estimate ($2200 installation) and you realize the car's going to be eviscerated and I just can't bear the thought....

Moving on to alternate and less invasive ideas leads to the following series of thoughts.

1. I'd like to just mount a regular Bell or V1 up by the rear view mirror. My guess is that if I can remove the overhead console with the courtesy lights in it, I can tap into a hot and cold, key on, lead in that area, and then hard wire the detector to that. Is that as easy as it sounds?? Any idea how to get that piece off? I note two screws inside the sunglass holder. Are those the only two?

Once I'm in there, and idea of a wiring diagram being available anywhere?

2. The K40 and Escort Laser diffusers/detectors that mount by the fornt license plate are very nice but to run the "alert" lead to the dash unit, is like trying to connect your big toe to your eyelash. The question I have is "Is it neccessary?"

I pose the following question to anyone with expertice in this area.
What if I hard wire the power and ground (there are three wires coming out of each...I'm assuming it's a power, ground, and alert) to a "key on" wire someplace by the headlights, and just don't even bother connecting it to the head unit !! In the event of a Laser shot, in theory they would diffuse it... I wouldn't be alerted neccessarily, although the now hard wired detector by the mirror might pick it up anyway.

This way, I get the protection of the Laser Diffuser, without having to drill the world apart....

Any thoughts welcome...

Regards

Steve

i think many people would choose the valentine

since it is considered by many to be BETTER than the k40.

is a non-invasive install, plug and play and easily removable.

and price... about 1/3 of the K40, if you want a more integrated solution, get it hardwired or w/ a custom remote display and you're set.

I have a V1 and hard wired my bike for it. It's real neat to be able to remove it and use it in another vehicle.

And Oh, I'm very satisfied. I have already saved it's cost in tickets in one year.

Radartest is a site by a fellow who wanted to work for Valentine and was not hired. It is considered to be a HIGHLY biased site.

I suggest reading the major magazine reviews or simply asking the opinions of Porsche owners on these boards...probably 90%+ use the V1.

Part of my deal when purchasing my 2005 "S" was that the dealer would hardwire in my V1. I wanted it mounted high, next to the rear view mirror. I spoke with the technician who expressed concern about running the wire down the "A" pillar because it's stuffed with airbag, but ended up doing just that. He said it took him about two hours -- but it's a VERY professional installation, no visible wires at all (except at the V1 connection) -- and powered when ignition is on. By the way, I've used a series of V1s, and couldn't be happier.

V1 is the best radar detector on the planet. Don't believe anyone who tells you different. I've had a series of Porsche's that have all been protected by V1. I live in CA and the CHP is radar crazy on the two lane roads where Porsche's love to roam. On I-5, the V1 pickst up the CHP 10-15 MILES AWAY!! The detector goes off so early, I thought it was broken at first. Eventually, the Chippie rolls up.

Only time I've ever gotten a ticket is when I had the detector sitting in the back seat... DOH!
