Level control module repair
Maybe about a year ago a "air suspension failure" warning come up once randomly for a day, then never again until it came and stayed a week or so ago. I priced out a new module and briefly wished for a deer to jump out of the woodwork into my car, but that's not realistic. Then I thought of how 944 dmes can fail intermittently then permanently due to cracked solder joints..
So in an effort to keep my 230k ctt in tip top code free without wasting $200 on a used module or 2700 on a new one, i decided to crack open my level control module open and bust out my magnifying glass and inspect solder joints. Sure enough one of the solder joints connecting the only relay on the board was visibly cracked when inspected closely...so I hit it with a bit of solder put the case together and Bam. Works perfectly. I hope this helps someone else. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...9a81145263.jpg |
That's awesome. Hoping to see more people like you get involved with these vehicles as they get older, so that collective knowledge makes P!gs more reasonable to keep. :)

Cool. FWIW, I posted up the VW part number for cross reference a year or two ago. All the genuine porsche parts suppliers were in the $700 range. I paid $80 for the used VW module, worked fine.

Nice work.

Interesting. Especially since I have the system error message at the moment as well, which had been intermittent.
Where is the control module located? Hard to get out? It probably makes sense to look at the module before I start dropping $$ on new sensors and re-calibration. MK |
On my early VIN 04 Turbo its in the right rear of the trunk area under that kick panel or whatever you wanna call it - under the cd changer, its the module with 2 connectors that is held in place with a black plastic clip. The part # on the module (facing towards the rear of the car) read 7L0907553E - the F is the later version, which is substantially cheaper than the E version used in early build 04's

Fixed my error thank you so much MM951. Your image was spot on where my solder cracked as well. Easy to find the module behind the right cargo side cover. Two easy pull-up disconnect connectors. Then the module has just 4 torx screws. I reapplied solder to relay tabs and put it all back together.
I spent more time looking for my magnifying glass that this repair took. 2004 Cayenne S 240k miles :) |
Nice work, and good post, OP.

Thank you very much!!
I took courage from your post and fixed all the soldering which looked bad, and saved $700 plus shipping to Costa Rica.
Thank you very much! |

Thank you for sharing! Excellent. Hope I don't have to brush up on my soldering skills anytime soon, but again, thank you all for sharing(including the cross ref to vw module)!

What's that brown stuff? https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...01e070a63.jpeg So my control module is not working I opened it up and noticed it was warm to the touch and this brown hard stuff seems to be on it. No idea what it is but the case has been sealed. Not sure I can solder this... Might try some alcohol to clean it... |
I opened up my last unit that went kaput.......
It has the same brown staining......I guess it's either electrolyte from a capacitor or a faulty glue that slowly melts under constant heat. But this has occured on each board. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...4ced5c24c.jpeg |
What's above the area with the goop on it? Do you have 2 circuit boards there.. or are those photos of the top and bottom (the fact they're rotated in orientation makes that hard to determine.)
