He is really really cheap and ignored it.
I saw him awhile later and asked him how he liked his turbo s, how it was running..
He was complaining that the coolant pipes had burst and after he had them fixed awhile later the starter went and some other issues and it cost him an additional 4K CAD, so he sold it
He could have had a great car for a long time, but due to being stupid cheap, it became expensive.

while I've got you guys here... any good sources for a starter?
Also, you don't have to remove the water pump to get to the thermostat, do you?

That's how I read it too. Was thinking it was like the coin op air pumps at less than reputable service stations.

I got mine through Auto Zone.

No, the thermostat is under the intake, at the front of the pipes.

ya, he’s a nice guy, but penny wise pound foolish.
it was basically brand new, he got it from a very wealthy guy who has lots of expensive cars and changes them up a lot.

I’ve bought Duralast Gold batteries that were actually OEM from Germany. Is / was that the case with the starter?

Too bad. I bought my 06 turbo s with 80,000km. Still had the original pipes and Ts which I saw as a plus as they had not soaked everything in coolant. Changed them out straight away. Now have 152,000km. All good

Got my Duralast starter (rebuilt Bosch, thanks for the recommendation), t-stat on its way from AutohausAZ with gaskets and o-ring, aluminum T’s from the place mentioned, brass barbed T for the 8, 10mm vent thing, and the manifold kit.

Now I’m slightly worried it will dip into the upper 20’s for a few hours tonight with some trace water in the system.
But after the warnings of coolant on the rear seal, I didn’t want to run any antifreeze through.
I drove around town a bit and stopped at KFC to try to run it dry and get up to temperature (is that ok for the turbos?)
It took a while to heat up. I let it idle since a steadyish trickle of water continued. The temp gauge just stayed at a bit of angle to the right of the straight up middle.
I’m confident there’s little water left, and I’m sure that even a Poland Spring bottle of water wouldn’t freeze in the trunk tonight.
Hopefully I’m right.
Oh, a co-worker taught me that warm water freezes before cool water. Go figure.

Darn, i just realized I forgot the short hoses.

What do you mean you're trying to run it dry and there's little water left?

Just that. I wanted to make sure there was no water to freeze tonight.

You're idling it, driving it around town and going to KFC with little to no water/coolant inside the engine and trying to work out what's left to avoid freezing and cracking the block?

Yes. The leak is a bit slow, it turns out. So I wanted to be sure nothing freezes tonight but didn’t want to add antifreeze because of the issue people have mentioned with a seal getting destroyed by the antifreeze leaking on it. I’ve been driving my Honda to work... but with this slight cold snap coming, I wanted to be sure the system wasn’t full of water.

Somehow I don't think this is going to end well...

Ha. I’m all done with my KFC run and my pig was purring peacefully when I shut her off a few hours ago. Never got any hotter than it would have jumping sand dunes in the desert. I’ll let you know. I’ll admit I didn’t think of the turbos at the time... but if they were in peril, you’d think there’d be some idiot light for that, right? (Go ahead, I set that up for someone).
But I wasn’t using boost or anything. Just letting the last of the drinking water I added to get home last Friday pee out.
