After months of intensive investigation on the vehicle at the medical examiner's office in Orlando, Asst. Medical Examiner Dr. Gary Utz said he suspects mother and daughter died of hydrogen sulfide intoxication, likely as the result of a defect in the car's battery.

Unlike many vehicles which have the battery under the hood, the Porsche Cayenne battery is found under the driver's seat.

Vehicle identification records confirm Lincoln bought the car in May from an East Orlando dealership.

Good find. Don't let anybody try to tell you a regular battery will be ok because it has a vent tube. There is nowhere to vent the gasses to the outside thru the battery box!

Bosch AGM all the way.......

I knew it was smart when I picked up the AGM battery....I didn't feel that the battery venting right under my seat was the best plan! Not good to hear...

Just what the Cayenne needed to plunge even further into the dismal abyss of diminished value.

The vent tube connects to the outside world.. at least on the 958. I'd assume the same on the 955/957 - every other German car I've ever owned has been that way.. (and that's a lot of German cars.) Chances are more likely the battery was replaced somewhere like AutoZone or Firestone - and the "tech" installing it didn't connect the vent tube.

Lots of cars have batteries in the passenger compartment. That's pretty darn sad for the people in the article. AGM is the way to go, but I've seen the vent on the 955. If hooked up and not blocked it vents through the floor to the outside.

This would also require the HVAC set to recirculation mode. The amount of fresh air taken in by the HVAC when it's in open mode is more than enough to push out any gas from a battery.. unless the battery was being severely overcharged.

AGM is the way ahead, however there are over a billion cars on the road worldwide, nearly all fitted with lead acid batteries. Batteries blowing up or gassing people seems to be incredibly rare. I’d take a guess and say that statistically you’d be far more likely to be killed in a car by someone else driving into you than by the battery in your car.
It’s not worth worrying about. (Unless you drive a Tesla, in which case you might need a fire extinguisher handy...)

Wow. That's so unfortunate. The battery location under the seat is kind of a pain, but it also prolongs its life by keeping it at a more even temperature and prevents it from being exposed to the same extremes (both hot & cold) it would see under the hood. This makes regular lead acid Cayenne batteries last 2-3 years longer than other vehicle batteries. I replaced the original in my 09 in 2016 - bough a Napa Gold AGM - and expect this one may last even longer since its on a Battery Tender when not being driven.

Such a sad story. One thing that should also be noted. Those that have electrical problems and keep needing to charge or jumpstart a weak battery should remember this. It is not worth the risk. Just replace the battery once you need to jump start the vehicle.

I failed to find the vent tube hookup on/in my 955 battery box. I'd love to know where it is.
