Finally got me another one!
So, I just picked up an '04 Turbo, and I'm very impressed. This isn't my first Porsche, and hopefully won't be my last. My infatuation with Porsche began when i was about 7 years old, and my mom rented the movie "Condorman". It was a horrible movie, but the bad guys all drove matching black 911's, and I fell in love. When I was about 20, I bought a 1987 944 Turbo with about 180k miles on it. Six days later, I blew up the engine, and thus began the love/hate relationship with that car. I ended up having to put a 3rd engine in the car, and after it was all said and done, my $6000 purchase translated into over $25,000 I put into the car while I had it. Power steering pump, timing belt, 2 engines, A/C compressor, heck, it feels like I replaced the carpet. I waved goodbye to that car at a "Push,Pull, Drag" sale at a dealership. Needless to say, I was a bit apprehensive about jumping back into the mix.
I then asked for the carfax on this 955 turbo. I called every dealership that performed maintenance. I called the small dealership that had it for sale no less than 4 times asking various questions. I finally bit the bullet and bought it. It was rough around the edges, needed a little TLC, but for an '04 twin turbo pig with 105k miles, I think the $9,000 price I paid was worth it. What do y'all think?

Congratulations!
After owning both types of cars, I think I would be more comfortable owning the 944.
They are far easier to work on, but can't match the comfort and carry capacity of the Cayenne.
$9K seems like a good buy.

I hope you get a many happy miles out of it.
FWIW: I also had an '87 951. It had 52k on the clock, and I paid $16k for it. It was amazing and trouble free for the entire time I owned it. However, I'm having far more fun with a '99 Boxster with 175k on the clock for which I paid $6k. So, do yourself a favor and go out and look at a cheap 986 Boxster.

Much depends on the maintenance history. Lots of luck with your new ride and post some shots after its detailed.

I'm also a fan of the 996. I drove a turbo owned by someone in my PCA region. It was fast, but I thought my 951 was more fun: more of a visceral driving experience. And since I like my 986 better than my 951, I'm sure I'd like the 986 over the 996. Of course, it depends on what you're looking for; the 986 is a pure sportscar, the 996 is more of a GT. But the Cayenne is an amazing over-the-road vehicle; so comfortable!.
