One advantage to the factory hitch is that it retains the ability to use the tow hooks should it be necessary. Also, if they've got the complete system you can pull the wiring harness and the control module. Install it all and have the dealer do the coding to enable it and you'd be good to go.

I wouild get the used factory hitch / wiring set up, especially as you are pulling a decent sized load. It is nice not to have to manually shift going up hills, etc. with the factory setup. Also, it is very robust.

Sunset seems to have the best price on the factory hitch. $884.98 Specify 955 or 957.

Is there a difference between 955 and 957 hitch? I found a few 06's at the auto wrecker near me with hitches on them I can buy, but would I need a 08-10 hitch?

I haven't been able to get a definitive answer on that. I know if you order from Suncoast you have to specify either 955 or 957. Make sure you get the harnesses and module located in the RR.

Yeah it looks like they are two different setups. I am debating between the curt hitch or used OEM. The price for new is ridiculous.

I like the idea of the cayenne knowing its towing something with (OEM setup/wiring), auto leveling, change in shift points, but is it really necessary?

I saves a lot of wear and tear on the engine.

How?

I have the factory tow and like it a lot. And why not? I've towed a 6,500 lb Airstream all over North America the past two years without issue. Drove the Baja penensula. America's National Parks. Alaska. Towed like a champ

I am curious as well, what wear and tear would the factory save over the curt?

It changes the shift points, similar to the tow/haul mode on my old Suburban. Prevents lugging the engine and keeps it in the power band.

There is a pick-n-pull place near me that has a few cayennes with hitches that I can buy for ~$100. Would I be better off to go that route vs the curt?
I am thinking of doing the same thing. No rush as I don't need it but I don't like that I can't if I need to. I have time but want to make sure I get all the parts/modules when I do (for a 955)

I went this route, be sure to get the wiring harness along with the hitch. Modules can be had for cheap off of ebay. The foam on the regular bumper bar can be fitted over to the hitch with some new double sided tape - same part.

Programmed mine with vcds - if I remember right, I followed the instructions for the touareg. Had to reset the central electronics module so it would scan and pick up the tow module.

Just recently did this on a 08 GTS. Went with factory hitch - it looks much beefier, retains factory tow hooks, has all the holes for the factory harness. The best I've been able to find out is that 955/957 hitches are same but the bolts changed from M14 to M12 at some point in time. Regardless, given that I had the choice, I got a hitch off 09 model and had no issues.

Bought everything used off eBay. Hitch w/ bolts (need longer ones for OEM hitch), harness, foam was $400 shipped to my door, control module was another $50-60. Factory procedure tells you to put in some fuses - all the fuses were already in the car when time came to it. Everything plugged in, though removing the rear seats and rear side panel was a pain. The tow module got recognized immediately by the Durametric, able to run actuation tests on the trailer lights without any programming. The only question I do not know is whether all the other modules will recognize a towing mode (parking sensors, tranny shift points, etc) without a trip to the dealer, but I have not yet towed anything to find out.

You need to cut the bumper. Any sharp razor will do, or fine saw. I elected to cut a much smaller hole around the hitch rather than what the manual recommends, and am much happier with it. Basically I did NOT cut the vertical piece immediately to the left of the hitch under the hitch connector, only cut the horizontal plane around the hitch connector, and also left a piece behind to leave some structural rigidity in the bumper.. Looks much better IMO.

Trailer connector is DORMAN 924308 if you need that. $15 vs $80 at the dealer...

Hope this helps.

Well I lucked out and found a hitch/wiring/tow module near by for a steal of a deal. Can anyone tell me if I need anything else other than what is shown in the photos?

It looks like the hitch, wiring, and module is all there. You will need the correct bolts and the foam piece off the bumper bar that is already in your car. Depending on what you tow, you may need an LED adapter so that it doesn't set off the warning lights in the dash.
