Default Odd 08 S Tailgate Behavior

Hoping someone may have come across our issue with the tailgate.
It operates fine from the key fob. It also operates fine from the switch on the tailgate
provided you press the tailgate open button once on the key fob.
It will not operate at all from the drivers door switch.

Any idea what may be going on?

Thanks,

Carl

Had a similar "issue" with mine. For me it just works when the engine of the car is working.

I assume you mean it will only open if the engine is running...which I truly hope is not the case.
How often would anyone approach the car with stuff to load with the engine running.

Thanks,

Carl

Not sure if there's a difference between the 955 & 957, but on a 955 the little button in the door does not open the hatch, it just unlocks it.
Like pressing the button once on the remote.

Wow. That’s very interesting. Never occurred to me it might just unlock it.

Thanks,

Carl

08 S here also... drivers door switch works only when the engine is running. And yes, there are lots of times that's useful... dropping off or picking up people at the airport for example. Driver doesn't have to get out. Also good for drive-through liquor stores where you never get out of the vehicle and they place your order in the cargo area. And lots of other uses also. There is a release switch above the license plate too, but that only works when the car is fully unlocked. If the tail gat is closed and the driver's door is closed with engine off, the only way to open the hatch is with the fob. And don't forget---if you leave kids or dogs in the car while you go in to a store briefly, the security system has motion detecting in the passenger compartment, so you have to disable that if anyone is in the car before you lock it. If you don't disable the motion detection, the car alarm will sound the first time the person or dog moves after locking the car. The disable switch is on the pillar just to the left of the driver's seat, kind of behind the driver's deat belt.

Ok, that makes sense but even with the engine running my drivers door switch does not open the tailgate.
I assume you mean it should open it, not just unlock it?

Thanks,

Carl

Yes, it should open the hatch to the full height that you set to the limit for garage clearance, etc. You will then be able to push the hatch manually a bit higher if you prefer to have more headroom. The switch in the door doesn't actuate the hatch instantly. As I recall, on mine, I have to lift the switch (way down low on the drivers door) and hold it up deliberately for maybe 2 seconds before the hatch starts to open. If you held it up that long and got nothing, then there is definitely an issue that you'll want to sort out to get everything working as from the factory. Or you can decide that the door switch isn't that big of a deal (I think the fob still opens the hatch while it is in the ignition, so just squeeze the fob button right there on the left. I can't swear to the fob opening the hatch while in the ignition with the engine running, but I seem to remember doing it once out of curiosity---of course I've woken in the morning thinking I won a 9 figure lottery.

Yea, it’s definitely not working then. I did try holding it up for a bit with the engine running with no joy.

Thanks a bunch for the help!

I have seen the switch that is way down low on the driver's door of a '05 Turbo.
Is the switch also found on all 2003 - 2006 Cayennes both Turbo and non Turbo?
I was told that it basically just locks onlocks the tailgate and does not lift the tailgate if you hold it for a few seconds.

The "lift" is only available on the 2008 +.

Am I correct about this?

Sounnds like that's right... no "open" switch for the hatch on 955. I have a 957 and with so many things the same, I assumed the 955 had a switch to open the hatch too... sounds like that wasn't a good assumption. Sorry for the mis-direction.

Finally got a hold of an 08 S manual. The door switch should completely open the rear hatch if the ignition is on and the switch
is held up til it's open.
