FYI, don't use a nice one, because it is likely the ATF will destroy whatever rubber parts were in it. It is easy to find one for 12-20 dollars with an off/on spray valve in the nozzle.

I used the OEMtools brand ATF filling system and it worked fantastic.
Amazon Amazon

The Schwaben 3-Liter Multi-Functional Filler System looks like it would be a good choice as well.

Default Update

Just came back from the dealer after getting ATF serviced. The tech said the original hardware (bolts, drain plugs) were still good and reusable.

They only used 7 quarts. I asked the service adviser and she said this was normal. How many quarts did you guys use? Driving home for 30 miles, did not notice anything different about tranny.

Hope they did it right.

I believe I have done the math correctly
You now have ~ 60% new fluid

That would make total capacity 11.6 qt? I'm more concerned that they didn't fill it up completely. Lots of turnover at the service adviser level.

I don't drive it that often, will probably die of old age rather than miles. Hope it lasts 15 more years. Next time X5M

The system is 11.5, of that you have direct access to 8.75 via the pan.
I recall adding almost 9 to mine when I did it.

I would expect it to shift poorly, if at all with 1.75 missing.

Something though is up if it was only 7 ...perhaps they have no way to measure?

A one time proper change would still only net ~75% new fluid ...I did it 2x, to get to 90+

Thanks phatz. For $450 they better have done it right. Maybe they didn't let it drain enough? I guess I'll find out if the transmission fails. Failed on my BMW for no reason. How many miles do you have? What year/model?

Running low on fluid shouldn't burn up the transmission if you resolve it right away. We see very few people with transmission problems in these cars other than the valve bodies getting gunked up or worn out. I find it shocking considering the load and heat they are forced to endure.

You didn't mention if they replaced filter, etc.

The Porsche Workshop Manual states the drain and fill capacity is 8.5 liters or 9.5 liters (8.9 or 10 qts) depending on the 09D.300.036.Q or the 09D.300.037.H version of the transmission IF you disconnect the transmission cooler lines and drain the cooling loop as well as drop the pan. I would bet money that none of the Porsche shops are disconnecting the cooling lines at the radiator and draining the cooling loop (lines and cooler) so a pan off drain and fill will only take about 5 to 6 quarts including spilling some during the heat up and top off cycle. See my post above for pictures of the job and how much came out of my pan off drain. If you run the fluid through warm up (40 C per scan tool) and cycle through the gears, with the vehicle level, the transmission is full when fluid spills out the fill hole. There is no way to under fill it if the procedure for filling is followed, but you can leave plenty of old stuff behind if you don't drain the cooling loop.

Yes those are the correct change quantities for the transmission
And hence my using ~9 quarts per change
Using gravity, pan off, to drain

If you let the trans drain overnight, you will get closer to the 9qt figure (although that's on the high end of doable). Otherwise, I think I only ever saw 7 or 8qts on a drain/refill. But yeah, the trans keeps draining for a long time and you can get more out/in there if you're willing to wait.

Thanks jbaker and everyone else.

Yes they changed the filter. I'll bet you're right and they didn't drain from tranny lines. They kept it overnight but who knows when they started draining. I hate that you can't watch them work. Pretty sure it didn't take 3 hours of labor
